Series Finales

I was curious when a show is going off for the final time, would you rather it end in a cliff hanger or in a resolution where everything is wrapped up?

Shows like "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer", "Dawson's Creek", "Friends" ... they all ended with a wrapping up of past storylines, and giving characters a new beginning ... and I think that's the proper way to end a series finale. And then there's "Six Feet Under" ... which culminates the way to end a show ... pure perfection.

Definitely a resolution. Sometimes they leave a cliffhanger (ex: The X Files) because they plan on making a movie... but the movie never comes.

I had originally read this thread title wrong, and thought it was asking for what we thought was the best series finale, and I immediately thought of SFU's.......I could not agree more with you on that one, Ken.

I also think Frasier had a great series finale, it wrapped everything up, but mostly started all the characters on their brand-new journeys, which I loved.

And then there are the series finales which weren't meant to be series finales, because the show didn't know at the time it was shot that it was going to end up being the series finale. Like the Full House finale. The second of that two part ep. concluded with Michelle getting her memory back and D.J. going to the prom. That episode ended with nothing special; it was just a normal episode ending, because they didn't realize it would be the end of the show at that point.

Resolution, duh. But with an open ending and the possibility of making a movie/special sometime in the future.

Interesting idea for a thread. I went ahead and edited it into our thread guide.

I always prefer resolution on a series finale. But with a bit of open ended ness in some cases. However, I don't want random cliffhangers that make no sense or that don't naturally lead to a good conclusion.

For example, with an old soap opera I watched, Sunset Beach, Gabi had fallen in love with two brothers, Antonio and Ricardo. At the finale, both knew that she loved them both, etc., but she left town so that neither was hurt. It was resolution, yet for real shippers, they could be left thinking there was always the chance of working it out with whichever brother they wanted.

I loved Sunset Beach and I agree Gabi leaving town was a good resolution. Thanks everyone for your responses.

I think a little bit of both. Like some aspects of the show resolved, but then leave a little bit for us to guess and draw our own conclusions from.

Series Finales - 2006

Are any of your favorite tv shows ending this month?
My favorite show is That '70s Show and it ends tomorrow night at 8:00pm. It's had 8 seasons. It ran from 1998 to 2006.

I want the series to wrap everything up. Cliffhangers leave too many unanswered questions and I don't like that when a series is finished for good. I do like when series allow the characters to embark on new adventures or lives, which allows the fans to see in what direction their lives took. I'm a big fan of "jumping ahead in years" when it comes to finales, too.

I like when everything is wrapped up. Cliffhangers are only good for season finales. I also like when you can see into their lives years from now. So you can see just how everything is played out. This year Charmed was definately my favorite. It was simply perfect.
