I haven't gotten a chance to see it yet. I taped it, so I will pop in the tape tomorrow and take a look. If I like it, then I'll tape tomorrows episode. Part II, right? __________________

You were thinking along the same lines as me about the comparison though. I was more like The O.C meets Twin Peaks starring the Aryan daughter of Max Von Sydow's Devil-Character from the movie Needful Things. The writing is very unsubtle. The scene at the end replaying Grant Show and EvilDaddy talking about Christina's "destiny" was so condescending to the viewers. Did they thought we would forget they just had that same scene about this a half hour ago. And having the Devil's Spawn named "Christina" (as in "Christ"-ina) was about as subtle as an anvil and why introduce so many plots and characters all of a sudden? What happened to the thing called mystery? Are the writers so sure they're going to be canceled? Also who lets strange teenagers, fished out of the sea, come stay at their house on an indefinite basis without even talking to their parents and knowing nothing about them. Come on now! The casting is all wrong too. You would think Noxon having been a member of the snarky Whedon-verse ME gang wouldn't go for the same old formula of casting people who look thirty as teenagers. When Sam Page's mom (formerly the college age daughter from Coach) first shown up I thought she was his sister, cause she sure as heck don't look like he's young enough to be her son. Although I may be biased here since I remember when Page played Trey on All My Children and he was already an adult lawyer then and that was YEARS ago. A shame since they have a talented cast (well the older folk at least) - FauxDrake from 24, Susan Walters from Dear John, Grant Show (who can do smug and evil surprising well) and the still gorgeous Dina Meyer who I've loved since Starship Troopers and who I'm still convinced can be a series lead even after Birds of Prey flopped. But the writing just isn't there. Also as a native NYer who lives minutes away from New Jersey I never knew it looked so much like California. Only in Hollywood. |

I'll give the show some more time since it is from a former Buffy writer. But this ep was incredibly so and incredibly predictable. It does have alot of potential to be good. If its going to last they're going to have to tap into that potential fast because with this being Fox, it can be canned within 3 episodes. And by tapping into its potential, I mean completely ditching the entire OC/90210 vibe that the show is carrying right now. It's suppose to be dark, not another teen sex drama. Ditch it now or Fox will cut it lose. Marti does have alot of writing talent as her Buffy eps have shown, but she's not going to win with this show if it stays so predictable and so cliche.
I have confidence they can turn it around, but its definetly a slow start. |

i really, really want to watch this show but it's on opposite Alias and that always comes first the only thing I can do is switch over during commercials but there's another episode tonight that I can watch fully.

<--- Snagged!
I agree with you guys that it did seem a little predictable, but it was only the first episode. Maybe they're just trying to set the scene so they can move on and get to the real juice of the story. I enjoyed the pilot and I think the show has great potential. I'll definitely give it some more time, and let's hope Fox does as well! __________________

I'm very ambivalent. I always liked Marti Noxon's work, but since Gail Berman at FOX has said that this series was the only reason that Tru Calling was cancelled...

The reason I think the Pilot isn't as subtle as you like is because of the fact is IS Fox and they have to cater to a specific audience and grab that audience FAST because the network does not give shows time to develop a following and ease-into what it is trying to be. This is the network's fault and thereby, forces writers to write this way. This goes for all network and weblets as well and is less so on cable TV. A perfect example of this is Wonderfalls. The creator, Bryan Fuller, explained this on a BTVS web-radio show a year ago when the show was canceled. He said that he knows part of the reason they were canceled was because the show he wanted to do... Which involves subtly and taking time to introduce characters and other important elements... Was not really the show the network wanted when they agreed to air it and when this happened... They pulled the plug. He also said this is something that a lot of writers now know about Fox, so they MUST cater to what FOX wants, or run the risk of not even having the show aired. It's not fair, but it is the reality of the TV landscape given that reality TV... as played out and cliched as it can be... Is still the big kid on the block that controls the majority of airtime and schedualing. Also, I don't think you can compare VM to PP for the simple fact one is based more in reality -- purposefully -- Where the other is based more on the supernatural and therefore, those elements are going to be different no matter who is at the helm. Like I said, we've seen just one episode and while that is the make-or-break for a lot of shows... I am going to reserve judgment until I at least see a couple more until I finally decide if I will stick with it or not. To not give it a fair chance is exactly WHY Fox programs the way it does, so in essence, if you don't give it at least a chance with a few episodes, then you're just promoting what you hate most about TV since this is the reality of how TV shows are made now on network TV. It's not the '90s anymore where "art" is paramount and networks are willing to take risks like Dawson's Creek and BTVS. |

Fox is the same network that really wanted to cancel 24, the only reason it survived its first season was because it was the most praised show of that season so cancelling it would've been crazy for them. I was thinking though, maybe Marti is playing into what Fox thinks is the way to get a show popular. Once she's able to get it there then she can take it in the real direction she wants. Given what she's done in the past, I just can't imagine that this is the show she wants to do. Atleast not in its current form. It's a big reason why Joss and many other Buffy writers don't like network TV at the moment. If you don't fit into a certain existing part, your show is gone, no matter the quality. |

I think after last night that I am going to like this show. I never really got into Tru Calling until it was too late but hopefully this show will have a fair chance before it goes down like Tru Calling did.

There is another episode tonight... The show's original timeslot... And I think it was meant as the second part of a two-hour premiere, so I am going to watch tonight and see if the show develops and (hopefully) get a taste of where Marti wants to take the show from here on out.

The other thing I wanted to add was that the reason Fox is the way they are is because of the greedy network execs who demand (not expect) each show -- even Pilot episodes -- Bring in American Idol ratings the first time out the gate.
The financial reason they want American Idol nubmers is that at its peak -- during the finale when the new AI is chosen -- Fox can charge up to $500,000 (or more) for a 10 second (or less) spot from advertisers and this is all they care about. Well, gee whiz. NO show is EVER going to do that within three, four episodes and especially not a pilot It's a double edged sword and they (the execs) have only themselves to blame since no show is going to pull that kind of ratings the very first season... Let alone with just, say, five episodes being shown... Yet this is the standard to which they judge whether a show is a success or not. The only reason they kept Tru Calling for so long is because by the time TC premiered, they had axed over 75% of their (Fall 2003's) line-up and basically had nothing else to put on the air except AI and other reality show reruns. So, basically, TC survived on the fact that if Fox had canceled that too... They would have had zero new shows for a brand new season and NO network ever wants to be in that situation... But again, it is their own greed and arrogance that puts them in these situations so what are you (as a viewer) going to do? |

Wow, that's an hour of my life that I'll never get back. What an awful, awful pilot episode... the dialogue and acting was beyond lame and contrived. I don't know how a project like this got on the air with actors of such a terrible calibre and dialogue that just plain bored me to tears. Not to mention that the shoving-symbolism-in-everyone's-face thing was absolutely insulting.
I'm by no means a FOX fan, but I'm not blaming the failures of the pilot on the network entirely. The show itself has a huge number of flaws that no one but the writers could have created. "Do you believe things happen for a reason?" was The. Worst. Line. Ever. How contrived is this show trying to be? __________________

I'll admit that there were a few over the top moments and cheesy lines, but I really think it's just going to get better and better. I have faith in it. Oh and apparently the second episode(tonight's) was the one that sold FOX on the show so I guess it might be good.
