Over*There: "Where someone has to die......"

I'm going to be watching and recording the show tonight. It looks great.

I know that some people are saying that this is bad or commecial profit off of the war ect.. I thnk that telling the soldiers side is very important. While this doesn't do that in the "reality tv" sense. It gives us an insight.

I hope there isn't a thread for this already. I can't remember if I saw one of not. If there is I'll take care of things but I searched back 10 pages.

The episode tonight was good. My fav. has to be Angel and Doublewide. Even if they didn't give us a lot on her. I don't really like Smoke or Mrs. B.

I feel bad for Dum. His wife is cheating on him... What makes it hurt even more is that she's a redhead ...

The preview looked great for next week.

Did anyone else watch?

I watched the show tonight, and I loved it. I thought it was haunting because it seems so real. I really liked all the characters, and when Angel sang his song, I thought it was really emotional, and I loved how it was played at the end. This season looks intense, realistic, and interesting. I can't wait to see what happens.

Angel's song has to be the theme song. I liked the song they had for the commercials better. I don't know the name of it but it was good.

The show is realistic it just has that sense... which gives it such a deeper emotional impact.

Manda, who is that in your avatar?

The song in the commercials was Seal's "Love's Divine". It's a good song.

And I agree, the show is so realisitc and it just makes it that all the more emotional and it definitely hits close to home for a lot of people.

Also, the person in my avatar is Bethany Joy Lenz. I noticed your sig-I love Nip/Tuck.

Wow, extremely impressive Premiere Episode. Highly entertaining and moving, and i'll be returning next week for sure. Will it be the next Band of Brothers? I'm not sure, but its still one of the most impressive Pilots that i've viewed in quite a while.

I really liked tonight's ep. The show just seems so realistic at times it's hard not to care about the characters. I also think it's interesting how they do the actor's credits and the theme song at the end.

I saw part of it last night ... very graphic and effective. And too close to my bedtime to watch. The part I saw was the young man getting his leg blown off in the landmine, then his dream in the hospital about being tortured and then the roadblock co-soldiers and their fight and shootout with the car that would not stop. Definetly a graphic depiciton.

This show is very realistic as it was pointed out before. I think most of that is due to the fact that they're not trying to force too much on us. I mean we aren't being overrun with "drama".

The episodes are easily paced, not too fact, not to slow...just right.

I'm glad we have an Arab-American, even though I hate terms like that it's needed in this case for description. I'm glad Dum and him were getting along so well. I know Smoke is going to do something stupid. I'm really sick of hearing his crap.

We did need more Angel in the episode though. Angel is the best one there... heck in the he came up with the theme song. It would also be good to see Double-Wide.

Poor Dum, he's over there and his wife is drinking while pregnant and having sex with different guys. Whom she meets at the bar... I feel sorry for her son as well.

Ratings news.
Quote:
War Is Hell for FX's 'Over There'
By Bill Keveney, USA TODAY

For the first TV series about a contemporary war, a dramatic ratings drop raises questions beyond the usual small-screen analyses. Did last week's second episode of FX's Over There lose 37% of its premiere audience because it was too gory? Does the series (tonight, 10 ET/PT), which follows an Army unit in Iraq and their families in the USA, hit too close for viewers still digesting news from the real Iraq war? Has news coverage tapped out interest in many viewers for a fictional drama?

Or did the drop — from 4.1 million viewers for the July 27 premiere to 2.6 million last week — result from more common reasons: lack of interest in the subject and characters, or erratic summer viewing patterns?

After just two episodes, it's far too early to determine why the audience declined or whether that will reflect future viewing patterns, FX's John Solberg says.

"As far as we're concerned, it's still a success," he says. The war drama has received mostly positive reviews from TV critics.

However, Solberg acknowledges Over There's uniqueness raises its own issues when it comes to viewers: "That was the biggest question asked of (FX president) John Landgraf and (Over There executive producer) Steven Bochco: 'Do you think people are going to want to watch a show about the war in Iraq?' And they consistently answered, 'We don't know.' "

Huge advance publicity probably brought in casual viewers who might have found Over There's content too harsh and decided not to watch again, says analyst Brad Adgate of Horizon Media.

But advertisers and FX viewers familiar with the cable network's gritty offerings probably weren't deterred, Adgate says. He notes that the median age for the second episode was 38.3 years, nearly five years younger than that for the premiere, indicating younger adults were more receptive.

Opinions on Over There from Army and Marine veterans of the Iraq war have varied. Army veterans who were shown the first two episodes by USA TODAY generally liked the show but cited a number of inaccuracies.

Marine Staff Sgt. Ian Lejeune, 26, of Murrieta, Calif., had similar sentiments, disagreeing with some elements of the fighting tactics and vehicle movements. Bochco has said his intent is to capture the spirit of soldiers at war, not create a documentary.

"All together, it wasn't that bad," says Lejeune, who calls himself a "nitpicker" when it comes to military depictions in film and TV.

Lejeune, who is recovering from leg injuries after his third tour in Iraq earlier this year, supports the show's decision to follow the recuperation of an injured soldier.

However, Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Erik Thiesmeyer panned Over There in a letter printed Monday in USA TODAY, calling it "garbage" that "made soldiers look stupid and unprofessional."

Lawrence Suid, co-author of Stars and Stripes on Screen, wonders whether real war news, such as the killing of Marines from an Ohio unit last week, could dampen interest in a contemporary fictional depiction. "My gut feeling is, I wondered why they would bother to make it, given (the war has) been covered so well on television."

Thanks for the article. I have to disagree with the Chief at the end of the article that said it makes soldiers look stupid and unprofessional. I never have felt like that when watching the eps.
