News Radio Appreciation: Good Times, Good Times!

This thread is dedicated to the smart and witty sitcom "News Radio" that debuted in 1995 and ended (way too early IMO) in 1999. News Radio's plot centered around the antics of coworkers belonging to the news station WNYX.

Its amazing cast included Maura Tierney (ER), Phil Hartman (Saturday Night Live), Dave Foley (Kids in the Hall), Joe Rogan (Fear Factor), Andy Dick, Vicki Lewis, Stephen Root, and Khandi Alexander (CSI: Miami)

To me, News Radio was unlike any other sitcom. The writers gave a refreshing look into office politics and romances, creating a perfect balance of intelligence and humor. Episodes of News Radio never got old, I've seen several of the episodes more than once, and I still laugh at the jokes like its my first time hearing them!

The cast of News Radio could not have been better. They all had different personalities that they brought to the show, yet they all seemed to mesh together perfectly.

I'm so excited that seasons 1 and 2 will be released on DVD in May!!

So lets get posting!

Here are some quotes that I found:

Dave: Bill, haven't you ever heard the expression, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade?"
Bill: Dave, haven't you ever heard the expression, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, and then throw it in the face of the person who gave you the lemons until they give you the oranges you originally asked for?"

Bill: Is it cold in here, or are you wearing an anatomically correct bra?

Matthew: Bill. I'm fixin' for another homoerotic adventure on the big muddy

Lisa: If everyone thought you should jump off a bridge, would you?
Dave: If everyone around here thought I should jump off a bridge, they'd probably just get together and push me

Bill: It's like my father used to say: "When I was a child I thought as a child and spoke as a child, but when I became a man I took that child out back and had him shot."

Dave: Hey Bill, I'm your friend.
Bill: Oh yeah? Where were you last night at 3 A.M. when I was watching Steel Magnolias and crying my eyes out?

Dave: Hey I have an idea. I'll give up coffee, if you give up cigarettes. Huh? We'll go through this together.
Bill: But you should have to give up something of equal difficulty. Like going to the bathroom.

Dave: Normally at a time like this I'd ask you for advice, and you'd say something that would make no sense at all, but somehow it would all fit together. Like, I would tell you, "Sir, I have a problem," and you'd say, "Well, what is it?" and I'd say, "Well, sir, Lisa wants to have a baby, but she doesn't want to get married," and you'd say "Dave, why milk the cow when you have a fridge full of steaks?" And I'd say, "Sir, that makes no sense," and you'd say, "Well, it sure made sense when that guy Chuck Connors said it in that movie Chinatown," and I'd say, "Sir, Chuck Connors wasn't in Chinatown," and you'd say, "Dave, if I wanted to have this conversation I'd have hired that guy Siskel Ebert to do your job," and I'd say, "Sir, Siskel and Ebert are two people," and you'd say, "Dave, just because the man is fat is no reason to make fun of him."

Bill: The eyes are the windows to the skull.
Dave: "Soul".
Bill: For those who have one, yes

Dave: Is your own life so boring that you have to obsess about imaginary love triangles you're not even a part of?
Bill: Yes

Bill: Let me tell you what I told my brother last Thanksgiving: give me my money back

Matthew: You would've loved it, David. A week in a foreign country, strange people, strange customs...
Dave: Oh, I know what you mean. I've been to Canada

Bill: I have a two-part question, chief. One, what does Lisa look like naked? And two, what does Lisa feel like naked? This question is for both candidates.
Dave: I'll field this one. As a prospective news director, it would be improper for me to answer that question. But if the unthinkable was to happen and I was to lose this election, well, then I could answer that question in almost pornographic detail.
Bill: Gooood answer.

Dave: Bill, have you ever heard the expression "It's easier to catch flies with honey instead of vinegar"?
Bill: Dave, have you ever heard the expression "Only a hillbilly sits around and tries to figure out the best way to catch flies"?

Dave: Wait a minute, Joe. If what you're saying is true, then... I still don't care

I LOVE Newsradio. It's probably my 2nd favorite sitcom of all time; right after Arrested Development. I wish they still showed reruns on A&E. I think I get some local channel that shows reruns really late at night, but I don't know which channel or exactly when they're on.

I'm so looking forward to the DVDs!

More quotes...

Bill: Is Matthews superior to me?
Dave: Genetically or in this office?
Bill: In this office?
Dave: No.
Bill: Ok... how about genetically?
Dave: He is ambidextrous.
Bill: Freak.

Mr. James: I wanted a house just like Xanadu, but without a dorky name.
Lisa: So what did you call it?
Mr. James: Fort Awesome.

Mr. James: Be careful, Beth, because the stock market can be a cruel mistress.
Beth: Well, so can I, but that's not how I want to make my money any more.

Bill: Dave, there comes a time in every friendship when you have to say, "I never liked you, get lost."

[Bill finds out Mr. James lost him in a poker game]
Bill: You can't bet me in a poker game.
Mr. James: I'm afraid I can, check your contract.
[Bill pulls out his contract]
Dave: You carry around your contract?
Bill: At times like these, it doesn't sound so ridiculous, now does it?

Mr. James: Dave, you need to be thick-skinned.
Dave: I am plenty thick-skinned.
Mr. James: Please. I've seen thicker skin on a bowl of pudding. Here, watch this.
[Mr. James lays his hand over a lit candle]
Dave: Sir, you don't have to impress me.
Mr. James: Wanna know how I can do this?
Dave: Wild guess... Thick skin?
Mr. James: Metaphysically, yes. Technically, if you do it fifteen, sixteen times, it kills all the nerve endings in your hand.

Hahaha!! I love all the quotes, especially the Fort Awesome one, that one is hilarious

I just wanted to post a portion of an article I got emailed to me about the DVD release of News Radio...

" From the very first episode, viewers knew they were watching
something special, and completely unlike the slew of cookie-cutter
sitcoms that ripped each other off on a weekly basis. NewsRadio gave
us a refreshing new look at office politics and romance, fueled by a
dose of madness that would skyrocket like Dave's blood pressure in
the years to come. The writers and creative talent behind the show
went to great lengths to make each story memorable, and made it look
almost effortless in the process. Recall if you will such travesties
as Bill nonconforming to the new smoking ban with all his might,
Jimmy defecting the task of giving some poor worker the shaft, and
Dave struggling to balance the budget while keeping Lisa secretly
sexed up during the workday. The result is pure magic."
-From the Daily Jimmy, Vol 2

I posted this portion because I thought it described the show really well I cannot wait for the DVDs!!

Another quote, just because it's fun
Dave: I think you're jumping to conclusions.
Bill: Dave, I stand still, the conclusions jump to me.

It's such an awesome show. The first two seasons come out on dvd on May 24th. Go to tvshowsondvd.com and find out all the awesome stuff included.
I can't say in words how much I love this show so I'll end this post with a quote hehe
Jimmy on himself: "James James, the man so nice, they named him twice."

NewsRadio is just the best The quote I posted was the first one I could remember and it's also my dad's favorite.
oooh I also like:
Matthew (about Dave)- "Looks like someone's getting a little bit P-A-R-A-NOID!"

So what was the first episode everyone saw of this fine show? And your top 3 fave ones of all time?

It really was the best, I miss the show so much! I don't think they could've come up with a more perfect cast for the show.

Haha Matthew, you just gotta love that guy...

Dave: There was an accident last night involving the copy machine.
Matthew: An accident with the coffee machine.
Dave: No the copier, that makes copies.
Matthew: The coffier that makes coffees?

Its hard to say when I started to watch News Radio, I want to say from the beginning, I remember being very young though, and I have since seen all the episodes. Ooh three favorite eps, thats a tough choice...I'd have to say my all time favorite episode would be "Boston" from season 5...and I also loved the episodes that Lauren Graham guest starred in as the efficiency expert.

Katie, I totally know how you feel about not getting any reruns over in the UK...they took our reruns away too But at least the dvds will be here soon!!

Gotta keep the NewsRadio love alive.
I first started watching it about 2-3 years ago thanks to my brother watching A&E repeats and me deciding to watch with him. The first episode I saw was Presence.(sp?) It was brilliant! I didn't know Dave and Lisa's full story but I learned quickly thanks to tvtome.com! So many great quotes, such as:
Lisa: Betting a mixing board is one thing, but betting a human life...
Jimmy: Lisa, we come from two different worlds and you need a whole 'nother road map to get around in mine.
My fave episodes include that one, Innappropriate, Smoking (for the scene where Dave and Bill yell at Matthew alone! ), President, Daydream, Super Karate Monkey Death Car, I forget what's it's called but the first one where Dave keeps trying to control the staff and show Andrea that they are efficient. Bill's songs are sheer brilliant hysterics! (and I love with the coffee or whatever is spilt on Andrea, I didn't care too much for her) I love the one Kevin McDonald gets starts in too.

Gosh, is it May 17th yet?

Matthew should switch places with Catherine. That way he could be closer to Bill and Joe could try to look down Catherine's shirt.

Now that I think about it, Lisa's hand could be resting on Dave's shoulder. However, it seems strange that Bill wouldn't be trying to make a move on Lisa...or even her hand.

Thank you, Jack and Bobby is a great show. Nothing compared to the comedy heaven that News Radio was but special in it's own right.

As I'm typing this..your post count is 117... which is my favorite number.
