It said in the article that the decision was made a long time ago and that if the show continued on for more than 2 seasons, he'd have to depart the show.

, yeah I did see that, which was a shame. It still puzzles me though that they knew about it for a long time, but didn't give the character an ending in the S2 finale

That sucks. They should've at least given his character a proper ending/closure.
