It's funny because he was so different from what I was expecting. For some reason, the last time I had seen him on TV he looked very Emo, with make-up on and all of that. And then he walks in looking very hip and stylish, with a jean jacket on and looking HOT! And I was a bit taken aback. He basically just thanked me for holding the door open for him, but hey...a girl takes what she can get

Popped in the next episode, distinctly in a MSCL mood out of nowhere again.

"You find a 5 page letter in a museum that starts out 'Dear Jordan', and you expect me to believe you didn't read it?"

And Jordan's song was really about his car?

Patty's confession that she thought she might have been pregnant being the one thing that cheers Angela up and out of her Jordan funk was also great. You don't see it coming, either.

Angela and Brian really do fight like they're already going out. And no matter how bad it gets, they can always go straight back to being good friends, as in the last scene. "Just wait until it happens to you ..."

More quotage ...

1.07, "Why Jordan Can't Read":

Angela: "Field trips are so intense. It's like everybody's been let out of their cages or something. And we're all roaming around ... loose."

Camile: "Well, it could be pre-menopause."
Patty: "What?!"
Camille: "Don't get all insulted. I said 'pre'."
Patty: "Pre-menopause? What, is that like 'pre-death'?"

Patty: (to Brian) "Well, um, I'm not allowed in Angela's room without a Visa. I'll let her know that you came, though."

Angela: "Huge events take place on this earth every day. Earthquakes, hurricanes, even glaciers move ... so why couldn't he [Jordan] just look at me?"

Graham: (to Patty) "How did locking kids in their room get such a bad rap?"

Angela: (to Brian) "You think you understand, but you don't. You just analyze everything until it barely exists!"

Rayanne: (about hooking up/kissing) "I mean, it's fun and all, but ... I don't always feel anything. Sometimes I feel, like ... numb or something."
Sharon: (looks concerned) "Maybe you just haven't found the right person yet."
Rayanne: "I've tried every type of person."

1.08, "Strangers In the House":

Rayanne: (to Sharon, about her and Brian) "So, Girl In Distress hurls herself on Guy With No Life, huh?"

Angela: (to Jordan, smoking) "Is this where you come to smoke? I'm always doing that. I'm always asking questions I already know the answers to."

Angela: "I know. I know I acted like that. I just didn't know what else to do. I knew I was the last person on earth you wanted to deal with."
Sharon: "You were the only person I wanted to deal with."

Angela: "There are so many different ways to be connected to people. There are the people you feel this unspoken connection to even though there's not even a word for it. There's the people who you've known forever who know you in this way that other people can't, because they've seen you change. ... They've let you change."

1.09, "Halloween":

Angela: (about Nicky Driscoll's ghost) "I mean, contact him? How? I have enough trouble contacting living guys."

Rickie: (to Brian, about Rayanne) "Ignore her. She got out on the wrong side of the coffin this morning."

Rickie: (to Brian) "I left my keys in your pants."

Jordan: "It's always the same. But you come because you think, you know, maybe something cool will happen. Cause what if something did? ... Happen. And you missed it."

Brian: "Look, I'm ... my hobby is photography. So I'm, like, trained. To notice stuff."
Rayanne: "And being the stuff people notice is ... like my hobby."

Omg, the Angela/Sharon confrontation ...

1.10, "Other People's Mothers":

Patty: "Danielle, go play outside."
Danielle: "Mom, it's not fair. My life is totally edited."

Rayanne:
(reading card) "Happy Birthday, and maybe more. Love, Dad."
Amber: "I know. I saw that. He meant 'many more'."
Rayanne: "He wrote 'and maybe more'."

Rickie: "Amber, you're so up even though you're surrounded by negativity."
Rayanne: "She's an x-ray technician."

Amber: (to Rayanne) "Angela is so cute, you could smack her. But her mom is like from a commercial for something really clean."

Rickie: "Like Tino's party?"
Rayanne: (drunk) "Only endless! Like, infininity. Where so much is going on at every second that there's no possibility for - for - for your mind to wander, and you become this prisoner of, like ... happiness!"

Danielle: "I hate this outfit. I wish I was dead."
Grandma: "No, you don't."
Patty: "Mother, just - "
Danielle: "How do you know whether I wish I was dead or not? Are you me? Am I allowed to have a feeling in this house, or is that just Angela?"

Angela: "Sometimes I think that if my mother wasn't so good at pretending to be happy, she'd be better at actually being happy."

1.11, "Life of Brian":

Brian: "I became Yearbook Photographer because I liked the idea that I could sort of watch life without having to be part of it. But when you're Yearbook Photographer, you're, like, never in the picture."

Brian: "I can't believe this. Apparently, Delia Fisher smiles at everyone. She probably comes from one of those small towns where everyone's friendly and smiles at you for no reason. I hate that type of town."

Brian: "There's something about my life. It's just automatically true that nothing actually happens."

Brian: (about Angela) "I mean, the fact that she called me heartless, that's just really good. That's excellent. How ironic can you get without, like, puking?"

Rickie: (to Angela) "... That I belong nowhere, with no one. That I don't fit."

Two random, small moments that highlight what's great about the writing of this show:

-Danielle setting a lollipop down on Angela's dresser after trying on her cosmetics.

-Angela suggesting to move furniture for Rayanne's party after we know that she rejected her mom's request that she do the same for her Grandparent's anniversary gathering.

EDIT:

-"Whatever happens, happens." When Brian says it, it's "the stupidest thing" Angela's "ever heard in her life", and when Jordan says it, she responds, "You know what? I can really respect that."

-Hehe. Love that Angela and Brian agree that "no one ever has a good time" at dances like the one they're at, and they totally missed Delia and Rickie getting down and funky on the dance floor. Yay, go Rickie! I had completely forgotten the context that scene was in (and, therefore, it's meaning).

Those quotes are great, Mel. Life of Brian has to be one of the best episodes of the series.

Quote:
Rayanne: (reading card) "Happy Birthday, and maybe more. Love, Dad."
Amber: "I know. I saw that. He meant 'many more'."
Rayanne: "He wrote 'and maybe more'."
I've hear this line so many times but in print, it is very disturbing. Maybe more speaks to how Rayanne views her life and although it seems to be an accident her dad was commenting on that without realizing.

Also, goes for Danielle's comment. A friend of mine once commented that angela was suicidal. But it seems like many of the characters are depressed!

Quote:
Brian: "I became Yearbook Photographer because I liked the idea that I could sort of watch life without having to be part of it. But when you're Yearbook Photographer, you're, like, never in the picture."

Brian: "I can't believe this. Apparently, Delia Fisher smiles at everyone. She probably comes from one of those small towns where everyone's friendly and smiles at you for no reason. I hate that type of town."
These are my two favorite quotes.

The school dance is just epic. Yup, hence the "go ricky" icon.

Yeah, I'm not sure I ever decided whether to believe that was an honest typo on his part, or commentary. There are always little intertwining things in MSCL episodes, like the fact that Rayanne kept getting the 'death' tarot card. Some are super obvious, some really not. Ugh - I will never forget the anxiety I first had when Rayanne's mom finds her daughter drunk as hell but assumes it's nothing out of the ordinary and leaves! ('Nooooo! Come back! You don't understand!') I do love her mother, though.

Man, watching multiple episodes like this, I'm skipping over the whole comment-post part. But I guess I can do quotes first until another re-watch. LOL. I just love that this show is short enough to bang it out and finish.

Whoa, what do you think Danielle was implying? That her sister is dangerously depressed? I can't say I ever found Angela suicidal. I recognize almost all of her inner thoughts from my own life when I was around her age, and I wasn't. She has some really sublimely happy moments, too. Angela is frustrated and at times depressed, but not hopeless. In fact, she's a bit of a dreamer.

I can't help but love those quotes too. He's so right on in the second one. Empty smiles suck, and what a creepy town. Yet he makes himself so stilted. You just want his character to have a dramatic development spurt, like, stat. Hee. The music that swells when him and Delia share a slurpee is out of this world sweeping. I had to laugh a little. Not that it isn't all part of the show's charm. Any impression of mine can be turned around with a good musical swell, esp. at the end. Like, man has Jordan said/done some unattractive things to Angela. But I still liked the 'taking her hand' scene. In the Delia/Brian episode, I felt so bad for each of them at different times, including her ignoring him at the dance even though he crushed her before with the date switch. It's just ... ouch.

I can still remember the scenes that made me cry when I first watched them in 1994. One was the end of "Pressure". Not because of what Angela says, but because she ended up "needing" Brian's bike after all, for an emotionally cleansing purpose, and he had decided to leave it with her 'just in case'. Brian's actions are always contributing favorably to Angela's romantic life (or the healing of it) with other people.

Two more eps ...

1.12, "Self-Esteem":

Rayanne: "What is 'holding hands'? I don't get it. What are hands? It's not even an erogenous zone."

1.13, "Pressure":

Rayanne: "Please. It's a pierced nose. It's not like an actual personality or something."

Angela: "But she's someone Jordan used to, um ..."
Rayanne: "Yes, Jordan used to "um" her."

Angela: "Everything started to seem, like, pornographic or something. Like, Mrs. Krayzonowski has sex. So does Mr. Katimski. They both have sex. They could have sex together, like right now. I am like the sickest person ever."

Angela: "So, you and Kyle broke up? I mean, was there, like, a reason?"
Sharon: "I guess I'd have to say ... it was my beliefs. I didn't feel like I should give up my beliefs, even for Kyle."
Angela: "So Sharon had beliefs. Sharon had decided to stay a virgin. ... So how did you, like - you just told him that you didn't want to, you know, like, have, um, sex with him? No matter how much he was, like, expecting it?"
Sharon: "Oh, no. Oh, no, no. We had sex. I'm saying I had a belief that he was being a butthead, which was true."

Graham: (about Jordan) "Well I don't know. He's a ... kid."
Hallie: "You're asking a man - sorry, sorry - to describe someone when I'm sitting here? Here's what he's like: fairly out-of-it, not unintelligent, sort of, um 'stray puppy'. You know the type; you're always trying to ease their pain. He may even be a halfway decent person, but let me tell you - trouble! Way too gorgeous."
Patty: "Thank you."

Angela: (with Sharon) "There's this dividing line between girls who've had sex and girls who haven't. And all of a sudden we both realized that we were looking at each other across it."

Angela: (to Brian) "I'm always doing this. I'm always asking you for something that's totally unfair for me to ask you for. It's like a sick habit. And just because you're polite about it doesn't mean it's right. It's not."

Angela: (about Jordan) "I should have just had sex with him. Why not? It would have been so simple."
Rickie: "But maybe it shouldn't be ... so simple."

Angela: (about sex) "I mean, I think about it all the time, but - "
Brian: "Wait, you think about it all the time?!"
Angela: "Brian! Yeah! Shut up! Boys don't have the monopoly on thinking about it."
Brian: "They don't?"
Angela: "No!"
Brian: "Okay, well ... I still want my bike back."

Angela: (to Jordan, about sex) "It's sort of like when you let me drive your car, and I loved it. It made me feel really powerful. But also really terrified, like I wasn't ready ... for that much freedom."

Jordan: "At least you got in some driving practice. Don't take your turns too wide or anything. ... I'm sure you won't."
Angela: "Sometimes someone says something really small, and it just fits into this empty place in your heart."

Angela: "People always say how you should be yourself. Like 'yourself' is this definite thing. Like a toaster or something. Like you can know what it is, even. But every so often, I'll have, like, a moment when being myself, in my life, right where I am, is, like, enough."

Yeah, I was never completely sure about Rayanne either. I thought that she overdosed and almost died to show how life-and-death her addictions were and if she didn't get help she would end up like Patti's college roommate. I think 'and maybe more' had to be a commentary because the writer was just so witty. Rayanne was like a ticking time bomb and she had so much at risk behavior. Yikes, it so weird to think about her character as an older person. At the time, I thought she was just a cool best friend type. But now I wouldn't think she would live to 25.

Oh wow, yes, Rayanne's mother leaving after finding out her daughter was drunk, was crazy. But at the same time, I love how MSCL showed the differences between Patti and Rayanne's mother and at the end of the day, I don't think one was better than the other. Rayanne's mother for all her faults really loved Rayanne and she was a good mother. Although, I always hated how she blew off Rayeanne's feeling about her dad, it was clearly bothering her. But Angela could never really open up to her mother and she was so judgmental, so both women had their faults.

Well, I thought Danielle was a bit...lonely maybe? I would be alarmed if I heard an 11 year old wish she were dead though. Well, I lent my dvd set to one of my friends and she kept asking me if Angela was going to kill herself. I asked why and she said she thought Angela was seriously depressed. I'm not sure that I would call her depressed she was just in that icky teen phase.

The second Brian quote is the best. And it such a city person thing to say.

Brian got on my nerves though. I agree he needed some action...from anyone.

Quote:
Angela: (about sex) "I mean, I think about it all the time, but - "
Brian: "Wait, you think about it all the time?!"
Angela: "Brian! Yeah! Shut up! Boys don't have the monopoly on thinking about it."
Brian: "They don't?"
Angela: "No!"
Brian: "Okay, well ... I still want my bike back."
I just love their interaction. As much as Angela pushes him away, she can still talk to him and he can still talk to her.

Quote:
Jordan: "At least you got in some driving practice. Don't take your turns too wide or anything. ... I'm sure you won't."
Angela: "Sometimes someone says something really small, and it just fits into this empty place in your heart."
This has to be one of the best break up scenes ever. I also love when Angela says she never seriously thought about killing him.

They were so great.

MSCL is one of my favorite tv shows, and one of the best ever made.

I created a channel on youtube to post some nice quality clips from the tv shows I love, and though there's lots of MSCL scenes already on Youtube, I also put some of the DVD extras, for those of you who haven't seen it.
