The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu) #2: "Pain marks you, but too deep to see. Out of sight, out of mind."
+ Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values'. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her. Official Instagram Cast: Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne/Offred Joseph Fiennes as Commander Fred Waterford Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford Alexis Bledel as Emily/Ofglen (later Ofsteven) Madeline Brewer as Janine/Ofwarren (later Ofdaniel) Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia O. T. Fagbenle as Luke Bankole, June's husband Max Minghella as Nick Blaine Samira Wiley as Moira previous threads: __________________

Thanks for the new thread.
I'm so looking forward to season 2. I was gutted that it finished off where it did and we didn't get to know whether June was going off to be punished horribly or somebody was gong to save her. __________________

You're both welcome.
Yeah, I hope June will be okay. She's pregnant and Serena Joy & the Commander could surely help her to get out of this punishment. Quote:

Thanks for the new thread!
I finished the series, I watched it all in 2 days. I see why others cant binge... it is depressing, but I also just love it, its so riveting and the acting and writing is amazing. I loved the moments of rebellion from June and cannot wait until season 2. I posted on the board more in depth reviews of each episode, but 5 and 8 were my favorites of the bunch, but I just love Nick (even though he does piss me off sometimes) so i enjoyed those episodes a lot. Watching Moira get to Canada and meet up with Luke! I loved that. June/Nick are just sdsfsdfdsfs. I really love them. And she's having his baby! I CANNOT STAND SERENA I HATE HER SO MUCH YOU GUYS. Not sure what to expect in season 2, but I kinda hope we get to see June somewhere else, away from Serena and the Commander for a while because I feel like going back to the house and continuing the SL there could just get kinda boring? IDK. And Elisabeth said we'd see more of a rebellious side, so I hope that shes somewhere else doing something. Not sure what but I am def. intrigued. I just hope without book source material it will still be good. |

OMG 2 days? But yeah, the topic is dark and depressing for me that I can only watch 2 a day/week. Before I watch an ep, I condition myself and don't watch anything else for that day.
I like June/Nick too although I had problems with how Max portrayed the character. He had like one emotion throughout the show. I also found out (like only last month) that OT, who plays Luke, is British and that's why he's familiar to me. I agree, it can get boring if she's just stuck in the house. But I wonder who else can help her? Both the Commander & Serena Joy want a baby to show off and June is finally pregnant. And with their system, June is most certainly not getting away for being the first one to not initiate Janine's punishment. __________________

oh Id have to watch something else immediately after to give a bit of lightness lol.
I dont necessarily get sad, I just get angry. I get so mad at how they are treated. I did think they were taking her off to punish her for the janine thing, but then Nick said to go with them, so it made me think it was a resistance thing. Quote:
So i think its him trying to remain "unbothered" in this world. Knowing he cant really do anything about it right now (though i think he is part of the resistance group) he just try to shut off that emotion and not let it over take him. He tries to be cold and uncaring because its just too hard to accept everything that this world is. and hes let her in little by little, but i think hes scared to fully let her in because he doesnt want either of them punished for it. |

Nick is part of The Eyes right? So he's not from Mayday like Luke/Moira are. Although of course, I don't think Nick means to harm June so I hope wherever it is they're taking her, it's not because she's going to be punished. And please for my sanity, June needs to be safe cause she's pregnant.
I really like Nick but imo, Max needs to work more on harnessing a bit of emotion in the character. But yes, I'm kind of 50/50 on his motives. Is he just content with this kind of life or does he want to leave too? Quote:

If he was a true eye he would have reported the commander a while back wouldnt he? I think Max has been told to play the character straight faced. |

I think we will. More bits and pieces will be revealed slowly I think. I think they will continue to do flashbacks to the pre-gilead next season...

Maybe he's also protecting the Commander or Serena Joy made him swear not to tell as he gets in trouble too? I feel like Nick has good intentions but given the position he's in, it's hard for him to "get out". So he follows the rules and bids his time, hopefully, into finally getting out.

Just finished the last episode last night can finally post here yay!
I read the book this summer and then wanted to watch the TV show, but my boyfriend decided to watch it with me which means going through it waaaaay slower because he works a lot. At least he didn't get bored, I find this story really scary as a woman and it doesn't seem entirely implausible. I watch all sorts of horror and it doesn't phase me, but living in a society where even my own body isn't mine anymore is nightmare fuel. I'm really interested in what'll happen with S2 as it'll go beyond the books in many ways. I want to see more of the society, and I like that we're getting more insight into the other characters. Janine's story is extra tragic. Not sure what I think about Nick, I guess that's deliberate! |
