Men in Trees (ABC; Fridays, 9)

From one of the headwriters and executive producers of "Sex and the City" and the director of the Academy Award(r)-winning film, "Walk the Line," comes a fun and sexy ensemble drama about finding love in the most unexpected places.

"Finding a good man in today's world isn't as difficult as some women think. You just have to watch out for the signs. You wouldn't drive with a blindfold on, but for some reason, women continue to date with one..." So native New Yorker Marin advises a crowd of her devoted fans. Marin thinks she has found her good man, fianc? Graham, but discovers, bound for a speaking engagement in Elmo, Alaska, that he's been cheating on her. Plans for the wedding come to a screeching halt. Concluding that she really doesn't know anything about men, Marin resolves to temporarily stay in Elmo, where the ratio of men to women is ten to one, and get started on her new book - about men.

Marin's subjects are quite a lively bunch. Adorably affable Patrick, an avid fan of Marin's books, runs the town's only inn and radio station. Man's man Buzz owns and flies the only plane in and out of Elmo. Sophisticated Ben runs the town's only bar and has an unusual past. Last but definitely not least, strong and silent Jack protects the environment and comes to protect Marin from a possibly rabid raccoon and, occasionally, herself.

There are women in Elmo too. Both Theresa, Ben's estranged wife and former rock musician, and Sara, the town's "working girl," introduce Marin to a whole new way of thinking about men. And of course there's Annie, Marin's biggest fan, who moves to Elmo after hearing about Marin's break-up to reassure her -- mostly by quoting the relationship advice she has learned from Marin's books. Back in NYC, Marin's tough-girl editor, Jane, lends her long distance support, and even braves the ice and bad cell phone reception for the occasional visit.

Marin learns that she has been living with her eyes closed for too long. Now that they're finally open, she sees the amazingly beautiful world around her, and for the first time she'll have the chance to stop and breathe. Now if she could just get the raccoon out of her hotel room, this place might be perfect.

"MEN IN TREES" stars Anne Heche as Marin Frist, Abraham Benrubi as Ben, Emily Bergl as Annie, Seana Kofoed as Jane, Suleka Mathew as Sara, Derek Richardson as Patrick, Sarah Strange as Theresa, James Tupper as Jack and John Amos as Buzz.

PILOT
Air Date: 09/12/2006

Relationship coach and bestselling author Marin Frist feels confident that, when it comes to men, she knows what to look for, what to avoid, and what will make her happy. But after her own relationship falls apart, she finds herself stuck in a small Alaskan town.

POWER SHIFT
Air Date: 09/15/2006

While Marin adapts to her new small town environment -- which includes being a relationship adviser on Patrick's radio show and being followed by a stray raccoon -- she gets surprising advice from the men in Elmo as to what she should do to get over her fiance.

Is no one posting here yet? I actually gave this show a try and rather enjoyed it. Nothing brilliant, essential or all that original but it was charming and funny. I'll surely be watching a few more episodes before I decide to stick with. Plus, I have a vibe it may be an early axe by ABC.

I sort of wish they hadn't started the season early, though, because I got all confuzzled and caught the premiere, but missed the sesaon episode. I think I'm gonna like this show, but it's really too early to tell for me just yet.

I do think it's funny (in a "this is not a criticism, just an observation" sort of way) how this town that's supposed to be overrun by men seems to have way for female cast members than it does male.

An ABC promo I saw today said it was friday's highest rated show. The actual numbers I'm not sure. But that gives me hope that ABC will stick with it for more than four episodes. It has great promise if it would just drop some of the cliches (except the racoon bit, which I actually couldn't help but laugh at in good nature). In all honesty though, it's the secondary characters I love most. Annie and Patrick are great.

I loved this show when it was called Northern Exposure. lol Seriously though, its kind of a fun show. I haven't found myself really laughing out loud yet, but it has its cute moments. I think they may be rushing the Marin/Jack relationship just a tad bit. I would have liked to see a bit more push and pull at least for the first couple of seasons. I'm willing to stick with this show for awhile longer to see where it goes.

I don't think this is quite meant to be a "laugh out loud" sort of show. I think it's supposed to be one those shows about life and its quirky ways or something.

So far I like it. There's still a lot to learn, but it feel like there's substance. You know, like these characters actually have a life in this town called Elmo (the name alone, really, is reason enough to have a show!) and they don't just come alive once the camera's on them, so to speak.

I'm still a little amused as the sheer number of women that seem to live in this town where men are supposed to outnumber women so tremendously... But that's okay. I really like the show.

I agree. I also feel like Anne Heche is trying too hard to act like Carrie Bradshaw and it's kind of annoying me.

But I LVE Annie and Patrick. They are so cute together.

I think Jack is broken I just really want to know how and why? I really love how this show sets up it's stories, I made my sister watch last Friday and she loved it without even seeing the last two epsiodes.

I think it did okay in the ratings last week. I really hope it lasts I'm already looking forward to the next epsisode. Anyone hunt down a Spoiler website for this show? Trust me I have been looking.

I don't know that I would call the Merrin/Jack friendship rushed. Sometimes people just click. Even people of the opposite sex. Besides, they're still working out the definition and boundaries of the relationship, so it's not like they're treating it like an established thing that's been there all along. It's new and fragile and yet, because it is new, still very flexible. I like it.

Mostly, though, I have to say that I love how this show is playing Abe Benrubi as a romantic lead. It's about time. The man is absolutely charming in every aspect of the word.
