I think NBC's reason was that it boiled down to budget issues and the ratings the fifth season was getting currently (it was rather fluxing, to be honest), not to mention that they wanted to own the rights to the show (which belonged to CBS) and wanted to order just 13 or more episodes. CBS refused to give up the rights, negotations between CBS and NBC ran sour, NBC cancelled the series May 18/19th, 2009, CBS picked it up the very next day (May 20th, 2009).

Exactly my thoughts as well. I mean it ended in such a cliffhanger what with her having the tumor and everything so it would've been lame if CBS hadn't picked it up.
