Dual Fandom: Starting with Gilmore Girls/Felicity

I thought this would be an interesting discussion... I know that there are many fans of Felicity who are now addicted to GG and vice versa... So I thought I'd open up a discussion on this topic. any takers?

This is now a place for people who want to compare two or more shows that they love but can't find a proper place to do that.

For example: As stated above many fans of Felicity have started watching Gilmore Girls. What are the reasons for that? Is there something about the writing of both shows, actors, or just the heart of the story that draws you from one show into another.

I never got a chance to watch Felicity. I can't remember why but I think it may have had to with my university dance troupe practices on the same night it aired.

Anyway, since so many people talk about it (heck, even Alexis Bledel loved Felicity) I wouldn't mind watching them all.

How many seasons aired? Are they available on DVD?

There were four seasons and they are all out on dvd. The reruns are on the WE channel... I loved the first and second seasons, but the first half season 4 is also good.

I find that both shows have healthy mix of comedy and drama and thats probably why they draw a similar viewership... plus the acting is good on both shows.

I loved Felicity and own all the DVDs and the same with Gilmore Girls. I agree with the mix of comedy and drama that is one of the main reasons I watched both shows.

Has anyone noticed that many of the same actors appear on both shows.

for example: Keiko agena and the guy who played the Chilton faculty advisor for student counselor, in addition to one of the manic poes...

I agree that the mix of drama and comedy is part of the reason why I love both shows. Also, both shows are intelligently written and have some of the best acting on TV IMO. I also love spotting ex- Felicity actors on GG. I almost did not recognize Keiko Agena because she seemed so young at the beginning of GG but on Felicity I totally bought that she was in college. I wonder how old she really is. Anyway. I love both shows and I'm glad Genki started this thread.

Keiko must have done Felicity while still on GG because she showed up in season 2.

I love the writing of both shows and there are so few shows that are well-written.

Keiko Agena will be 32 in October, assuming that the IMDB profile of her is correct. I would guess that since a lot of actresses either do not reveal their birthdate, or lie about it to make themselves seem younger, she probably is 31. I remember seeing a recording of that cringe-making thing that Brooke Burke (I think that's correct) hosted for the ABC family network and she asked if the cast hung out together after filming and I think Alexis Bledel said something about she once helped Keiko move a bookcase or something like that, but given the age difference between them, it's perhaps not surprising that they don't really hang out after filming.

Other Felicity alumni who have appeared on Gilmore Girls are Jim Ortlieb (Professor Hodges the Organic Chem prof on Felicity and a teacher at Chilton on GG, at Robert Clendenin (the second Poe on GG and the mail room guy (season one) and faculty advisor whose job Noel took over (season four) and Alan Blumenfeld (Rabbi Barans on GG and Sean's Dad on Felicity).

I agree with others that the two shows are both smart, witty and funny with a mix of comedy and drama and they both have almost uniformly excellent casts who make you empathise with the characters and care about them. There are little touches that go on in the background which show that a lot of thought has gone into the shows (for example in Written in the Stars when Paris throws a wake for Asher, she and Marty and Rory are talking and Rory sees a couple of guys trying to bring a keg into the wake and gestures to Marty to go and tell them to go away. It was a tiny little thing but it was just really funny in the context of the situation but at the same time if you were not watching carefully, you might have missed it.

The whole Asher thing was hilarious.

I never knew Keiko was in her thirties, she looks so much younger than that. I love to watch for common actors between the shows.

There was also a quote from Lauren Graham about Felicity. Something about her liking the show and thinking that she could work with the WB if they were putting on shows like it. I'll try and find it.

I think that its amazing that stars of GG also enjoy Felicity and probably the opposite is true as well.

That is so cool that Alexis and Lauren both like Felicity. They obviously both have great taste. I was watching Forgiveness and Stuff on DVD last night and I spotted another Felicity alumni. The nurse at the hospital that Emily is yelling at is I think the same actress who played Felicity's teacher in season 4 when she copied her paper from the library. I still can't believe Keiko is 31, she looks so much younger. I think that the age gap is probably part of the reason she and Alexis don't really hang out. But I think Alexis is known for being a shy, private person and she probably keeps to herself. I haven't seen all of GG season 4 yet so I haven't seen all of the Asher storyline but I will check it out when I get my season 4 DVD. I love GG because you have to watch it several times before you pick up all of the subtle references and jokes.

You're right. I'm not sure I could even remember the teacher (that was another of the crappy storylines in season four...) but the actress is called Jane Lynch. Her IMDB profile is here and has the guest appearances for Felicity and Gilmore Girls. Not only that but if you check lower down it seems she was also Pacey's mom on Dawson's Creek too. The WB has been good to her .

Yes you definitely have to watch it several times to pick up on everything but what I do most of the time is watch then read the transcript online. I think you'll enjoy the last third or so of season four when things really started to pick up (not quite as enjoyable as Ben's chase of Felicity in the second half of season two but still not bad ).

A final thought, it occurred to me that Richard (on Felicity rather than on GG) and Kirk are quite similar type characters you could almost see them swapping roles, although maybe Sean Gunn looks a little too old to be a student.

Id, that is too funny. I am imagining Kirk saying some of the lines Richard said in Season 3. I also wondered if Robert Patrick played Kirk would kirk have seemed more or less annoying. Maybe the shirtless scenes would have been a little more bearable.
