The Black Donnellys

Anyone looking forward to this show.

I got these from TV.com

Airs Next: NBC at Thursday 10:00 PM (60 min.)
Status: New Series Premiered: January 4, 2007
Show Category: Drama
More Pictures From the Oscar-winning creative team behind the 2004 movie Crash, Paul Haggis (thirtysomething, Million Dollar Baby) and Robert Moresco (Millennium, Million Dollar Baby), comes The Black Donnellys, a dark drama about four young Irish-American brothers living in New York's notorious Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. The series, narrated by wannabe gangster and compulsive liar Joey "Ice Cream" (Keith Nobbs, Phone Booth) – so named after a childhood incident involving ice cream – tells the story of the brothers' sudden initiation to the organized crime scenes of New York City when they are forced to take on the Italian mob.

The four brothers – Tommy (Jonathan Tucker, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Jimmy (Thomas Guiry, Mystic River, Black Hawk Down), Kevin (Billy Lush, Huff) and Sean (Michael Stahl-David, Uncle Nino) – will do anything to keep each others' backs. The show also stars Kirk Acevedo (Oz, Law & Order: Trial by Jury) as Nicky Cottero, a local mobster, and Olivia Wilde (The O.C.) as Jenny Reilly, a former tomboy and Tommy's secret crush.

The series is produced by NBC Universal Television Studio in association with Blackfriars Bridge Productions.

Hey all - newbie delurking to offer an opinion. Of the eight or so fall pilots that I've seen so far, The Black Donnellys is one of the best. I went into the viewing with somewhat low expectations - the premise didn't really appeal to me (I've never been able to get into The Sopranos), and I'm not a huge fan of Paul Haggis' Crash (dodges bullets), so I didn't really think that I'd care for the show. But now, two days after watching it, I still can't get this show out of my head, and I'm counting the minutes until it premieres in January.

The tone of the show is dark, and there were several moments with disturbing violence, but I found myself laughing outloud quite a few times, especially at the weasly narrator 'Joey Ice Cream.' The pilot moved along at a brisk pace, and I had to rewind a few times to keep all of the character/plot information straight, but my attention was rewarded by the great payoff - there were some great OMG!!!WTF!!!! moments that left my jaw on the floor.

Also, the characterization was spot on. While each brother sounds like a cliche on paper, ie the artist, the gambling addict, etc, Haggis includes little moments that elevate them from stock characters to fully realized people. And while most of the actors were unknown to me, minus the brilliant Kirk Acevedo from Oz, the cast is stellar. I have to mention Jonathan Tucker in particular, who I'm already EEE!!ing over. I'd never seen his work before, but his performance as the 'lead' brother Tommy Donnelly is so realistic and heartwrenching that by the end of the episode I was literally a puddle on the floor.

Whew, excuse the long-winded post! Long story short: even though they're depriving us ER fans of Ray/Neela goodness for a few weeks, give Black Donnellys a try - hopefully y'all will enjoy it as much as I did

Hi clarevoyent! Welcome to FanForum and the Tv board.

I will be watching this show. I love The Sopranos and darker type shows. I only worry that it will be cancelled because it's going against CSI.
