BELLISARIO: The good thing about our relationship, and what I’m very grateful for, is that Patrick is very inspirational to me, as an artist, because he’s willing to give me his honest opinion.

ADAMS: Sometimes too honest.

BELLISARIO: You can never be too honest. It’s always supportive. As artists, we’re both looking to figure what our individual voices are and we want to support each other, in that. Sometimes that Venn diagram crosses over, and sometimes it very much doesn’t.

ADAMS: We’ve both worked on things before where we’ll go to the other one, and then be like, “I’m just not the person to help with this. I just don’t think I see it.” And that’s okay. That’s not a sign that we need to walk away or stop. Other times, we’re on the same page here and we agree. I respect her opinion. It just totally depends on what the idea is and what part of the process you’re in. Sometimes it does not work, at all, and that’s painful and scary because you’ wonder if you’re on the wrong track. We just have to say to each other, “No, I don’t think you’re on the wrong track. I just think you need a different support system. I don’t know that I’m the person to do this.” It’s taken a bunch of years to get to the place where we know that and have that vocabulary in our conversations, but it’s a pretty good spot to be in, as people who are obviously spending our lives together, and also trying to collaborate and have a lot of different things that we’d like to get made.

BELLISARIO: That’s what makes it so much more valuable. When we do find the spots where we crossover, and it’s a story that we’re both interested in telling, that’s really exciting because then we just feel more ready to jump in and we value it more. We value each other’s opinions, when we’re on the same page. When weren’t not, it just clarifies where we need to dig our own heels in and go, “Okay, I really appreciate your opinion, but that’s just not where I see this going. Thank you so much for making me more solid in my vision.” And then, we go our separate ways.

ADAMS: Sometimes fights make things better.

BELLISARIO: That’s very true.

ADAMS: Arguing about things can make you feel better, not that we argue, ever.

BELLISARIO: Yeah, we’ve never argued.

ADAMS: Never.
