I wanna say it's like a life force. It keeps them alive longer maybe. Or to makes them stronger, gives them more power.

I think Kira's mom talked about her last source of power being in her last tail. I think the Nogitsune stole the last one, if I remember correctly. It made him stronger, so others can actually use it.
