Yeah, that "But he's my friend"/"So was I" rings false to me because while they had a cordial working relationship, I didn't really see them as good friends.

Right. Tony's close friends are Bruce, rhodey, and pepper...that's about it lol. Just the very end of ultron as tony leaves, did it show true closeness
