I loved that entire last scene between them! absolutely loved the light/dark metaphors - both of them. I thought this was a really great ending to the show! Very satisfying!!

Yeah, I loved the ending, I loved that it ended with the two of them, I absolutely LOVED the song that played during the credits and now I have to download the entire soundtrack because it was stunning The show got a bit lost around the middle, it had a lot of plot points and clues it never followed up on and I was expecting something absolutely mindblowing with amazing twists but it was enjoyable still

"True Decective" disappoints

So did I, ladies. True Dectective is a redemption story ... like Young Americans, or the first generation of Skins. As you may have noticed, I'm a sucker for them. But I stick with what I posted on this thread's predecessor on May 15, here -- which Anja said she wouldn't read until after she'd finished TD. So now that you both have finished it:
For me, Monaghan was one of the best parts of True Detective. But then, even back in 2000, I thought she was the most stunning girl in Young Americans.

I found True Detective too ambitious, to the point of being pretentious. A lot of loose ends were never tied up, on both the plain-plot and the symbolic levels. If you thow around a lot of obviously symbolic visuals, and then never deliver their reference ... that's really bad form.

Why and how is some rich, politically influential family in Louisiana systematically promoting some weird Satanic cult? That really does require explanation. None is provided.

Similarly, some of the symbolic stuff turns out not to symbolize anything. The "yellow king" references, for example. What are they about? Gold, money? But how does money figure into all this? What does the cult need money for? Or how does the cult serve money? It's never made clear. ... And the Bible verses on the walls of the burned church and the revival tent? Their reference is not clear to me. ... I'm more receptive to symbolism than most (as my posts on YA and Skins have shown), but True Detective lays it on thickly, and then seems not to deliver. Am I missing something? Is the cult a metaphor for capitalism? If so, I find it strained (notwithstanding my socialist inclinations).

By contast, the symbolism in Young Americans is so subtle that teen viewers can miss it entirely ... but when you start to see it, the message it delivers is rich -- and edifying.
So, am I missing something, or does True Detective over-promise and under-deliver? I'd like to beilieve I'm missing something, so help me out if you can, please.

I have to admit I don't mind that they didn't explain every single detail/reference/motive, because we saw the show very much from Rust and Marty's POVs, instead of also seeing it through the eyes of the cult etc. So the show and the storytelling, in a way, is biased.
Personally I just really thought the show kind of lost itself in episodes 4 and 5. It was all "Rust goes undercover" and drugdealers but where did it lead us in the end?? It felt like a waste of time, like filler episodes to pass the time until we finally got to the climax of the story. While I did love the two different timelines and that way of storytelling, it probably went on for too long, because tbh the story finally picked up pace again and got interesting to me again when the interviews were over and the storyline was completely in the present.
Seeing as they'll do a second season, it'll be interesting to find out if next time they will focus on a simpler case maybe?
Re: Michelle, I thought she did great, but I have to be honest, she wasn't in the show enough for me to consider her the best part. and let's be honest, her character was little more than a plot device to drive the guys apart?

Btw, there's a new Michelle movie, The Best of Me, that comes out this fall, and it sounds like a rom-com with her and James Marsden. I am so here for that!

I completely agree. To make the point that Rust has some seriously nasty experience under his belt did not require nearly so much time. ... But if it leads nowhere, then all the religious symbolism and the stuff about some rich and powerful family covering up for the cult is equally superfluous. My sense is that True Detective was seriously flawed.

I think she's way more than that. The way Marty treats Maggie is what establishes his need for redemption. And Maggie's attraction to Rust is genuine, and mutual -- that she has to use Rust as a way to get rid of Marty is tragic, for both of them.
