society_of_camera_operators Philadelphia, PA 2011. “Silver Linings Playbook”. DP: Masanobu Takanagi. I loved this experience. I have to thank my fellow SOC member Geoff Haley for this one. He kicked in the door for David O. Russell and showed him the way thru. His work on “The Fighter” raised the bar for what David brought and expected of me. In all honesty, I am still processing the experience. The hardest job I have ever had to do. I learned everything all over again about being an operator. David does that to you. He breaks every notion of traditionalism down and at the same time holds it in the highest regard. Its convenitally unconventional. On a DOR film, the camera is a character. Cliche right? Nope. I never have been so effected by characters/actors ever. Laughing, crying and screaming along with them. It all happened. He is a unique filmmaker and in my opinion, one of the best contemporary artists out there making films. They are true and honest and everyone on that set felt it. When the camera rolled out of film(and it did for almost every take((2 perf 35mm-8 min in the steadicam)), I needed a hug. To witness academy award winning performances 3 feet(or minimum focus on the lense, which ever came first) was such an honor. He took something as traditional as a simple Rom-Com, Boy meets Girl story and turned into “Silver Linings Playbook”. An amazing cast in front and behind the lense.
