This was my favourite film out of the ones I watched! I loved loved loved the storyline, and how everything mixed in the end.
This was the first movie I saw Jen in. I won't pretend that I became a full blown fan at that point (my Jennifer Lawrence fandom began with Winter's Bone), I was much more interested at the time with seeing Kim Basinger play a role with a good deal of meat on it (an unfortunate rarity for the more, shall we say, mature actress), but I do remember telling people at the time that the girl who played Basinger's daughter (I was trying to keep the true nature of her role under wraps) was really bloody good. Like seriously good!

In fact it is my contention that the two stand out scenes in the movie belong to Jennifer and Kim.

For the record those scenes are the tender, very human moment when Gina reveals her mastectomy scars to her lover, and the emotional sucker punch of Mariana's tragic mistake. Jennifer just makes that moment so... real.

What I love most about Arriaga's writting is his fractal structuring. Presenting story elements out of order, without providing context, actually causes the viewer to pay more particular attention to the smaller moments because we're trying to figure out the connections, and as a result are drawn deeper into the character's, the situations, and the emotion of the whole thing. The best example of this actually comes from another movie; 21 Grams, which Arriaga wrote, but Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu directed. In that movie there is a moment early on where Naomi Watts is seen cradling a pair of children's shoes. We have no idea the exact significance of this, but we can guess. Our need to make sense of what we're seeing though, makes us pay closer attention, and as a result we are made to feel Watt' character's obvious pain with even greater and more palpable acuity.

Anyway, I like The Burning Plain too, is what I'm saying.

Great post, Tony!

I've seen this so I can wait for a rewatch. Maybe we could add THG and then TBP to the rewatch list?

Leyla, I'm glad you loved the movie too.

Hannah, if you want help with the torrent stuff you can pm me.

My mom hanged at my sister's this week and they watched "The burning plain".
She told me what a story it is oh my, but the really 1st thing she said was "The Young one was terrific ..." ... meaning what impressed her the most was Jennifer and her performance in the movie ...

Ah, my first Jennifer Lawrence movie.

I saw this in the theatre, because of the director. Stayed through the credits to learn the name of the girl that played Mariana...
