I'm thinking though, about David O. Russell's tendency to work repeatedly with the same actors. With that in mind... I'm leaning toward Christian Bale. Bale too looks nothing like Marland, and is more than ten years younger than the man was during the period that the film will be predominantly set. I'm assuming though, that they're going to need Marland to be younger in some of the earlier scenes (when a 16-year-old Lydie first comes to live with him), and it's always easier to age up than down. Mostly though, he's just an extremely powerful actor, and would be a solid fit for the role I wonder as well, if one of the reasons for casting Jennifer as Bale's wife in ??'American Bull****'?? was to get a read on how they might work together. Then again, maybe I'm over thinking things. Of course it might be someone entirely new to Russell's oeuvre. Jennifer's Catching Fire/Mockingjay co-star Philip Seymour Hoffman could be a very strong choice... __________________

I also thought of Bale (because of DoR pedigree) and Hoffman (slight resemblance). Agree on Oldman = awesome
Also..is that a wart or wtf by his nose? |

Other names off the top of my head...Russell Crowe, Bill Murray (!)..
Has a bit of a resemblance to Jeffrey Jones playing Criswell in Ed Wood |

Murray's a cool offbeat choice. But too old, I think.
Same goes for Jones. I like Russel Crowe though. That could work very well. __________________

He certainly suits the role, but age is maybe an issue as it could be with Bale. Though again the movie might actually require that... __________________

A lot of rubbish in the talkback there, Chaz. Most of it I'll discount on the grounds that it's not worth talking about. The idea that Jennifer is somehow unsuited to a period film, as one person suggests, seem so random, arbitrary, and baseless an assertion, that it's hardly worth debating.
Serena, I've no doubt, will put an end to it anyway. As for whether David O. Russell is the best choice 'to go all Malick', as one person puts it... I would argue that it is Russell's arch, neurotic, and atypical approach to genre - seen in films like Three Kings, The Fighter, and Silver Linings Playbook - that's going to make this film into something unique. It won't be Malick, or Lean, or any of the other filmmakers behind the great cinematic epics that you can name. It'll be something entirely it's own, but with accents of the familiar. Again, like The Fighter or Silver Linings. Also, incest is something Russell has played with before. Though 'Ends Uncle/Niece love story (and we're told that it is very much a love story) seems far removed from the soul crushing, manipulative Mother/Son tryst of Spanking the Monkey. I expect an off-centre approach from Russell, and that will be this films greatest strength. Mark my words... __________________
