If you’ve seen “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” already, you’re probably pretty worried about Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) right now.

The movie ends on a cliffhanger with Peeta driven totally mad, convinced due medical experiments performed on him by the Capitol that Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is a murderous mutt, hell-bent on killing him and totally, fully evil. There’s a crazy sequence in which Katniss, thinking she’s going to have a huggy reunion with Peeta,is instead met with hands around her throat and a Peeta who basically has a cartoon word bubble reading “Exterminate!” hovering over his head.

Not quite what she expected.

In Suzanne Collins’ original novel, “Mockingjay,” she describes hijacking as “a type of fear conditioning.” Here’s how it’s initially explained to Katniss in the book.

“Recall is made more difficult because memories can be changed.” Beetee taps his forehead. “Brought to the forefront of your mind, altered, and saved again in the revised form. Now imagine that I ask you to remember something — either with a verbal suggestion or by making you watch a tape of the event — and while that experience is refreshed, I give you a dose of tracker jacker venom. Not enough to induce a three-day blackout. Just enough to infuse the memory with fear and doubt. And that’s what your brain puts in long-term storage.”

I start to feel sick. Prim asks the question that’s in my mind. “Is that what they’ve done to Peeta? Taken his memories of Katniss and distorted them so they’re scary?”

Beetee nods. “So scary that he’d see her as life-threatening. That he might try to kill her. Yes, that’s our current theory.”

Could this really happen, we wondered? (With full knowledge that tracker jackers aren’t real, of course.) We turned to Dr. Chloe Carmichael, a clinical psychologist, hypnotist and former yoga teacher with experience in guided meditation, to find out.

“In a nutshell, absolutely,” she told MTV News. She hasn’t seen the movie, but she’s seen Collins’ description of the hijacking process.

“They talk [in the book] about this place in the brain that they call the house of fear, and that’s exactly what they call the amygdala in psychological literature,” she said. “And the amygdala is actually located in the brain near the hippocampus, and the hippocampus is the part that stores your memory. And there’s actually a drug, it’s called propranolol. But when someone for example goes through like a violent rape or something like that, or they see a very traumatic experience, if we give them propranolol, then they actually -– it’s a beta blocker and it does stop the amygdala in a way from doing whatever it’s doing, so that the person doesn’t have that acute fear based memory anymore.

So what this text is talking about is almost doing the same thing in reverse. Like they’re ingesting this venom into the brain to activate the amygdala and then whatever stimuli is presented to this person when the amygdala is activated, they’re saying that that person will then store it in code as a scary, violent piece of memory.”

So it sounds like the Capitol really knew what it was talking about there. And as for the repetition and hypnotic state, Carmichael saw more similarities to real life. The repetition, she said, was like “almost like making a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy -– and each time you can change [the memory and association] a little bit more…it is true that when we’re in that hypnologic state, our mind becomes very suggestible. So if we have somebody in that very suggestible state, and then we got their amygdala’s very active and then we presented them with stimuli, in this case such as Katniss, I definitely think that it actually sounds very plausible.”

Much of “Mockingjay – Part 2″ will have to deal with Katniss and the District 13 rebels trying to rehabilitate Peeta from the hijacking, and deciding whether it’s even possible. What Carmichael said about coming back from an altered state with strong, realigned associations, might not spell good news for Katniss and Peeta’s happy future together.

“I think that it would be hard,” she said. “It’s almost like once you look back to the photocopy of a photocopy story, I think at some point it would just get to be confusing. If we have one narrative and experience that we know and then we go through a hijacking and it’s gets changed, then we have to reorient ourselves to that new experience. And if we then go through another change, I’m not sure that we could so easily then just grab onto yet another new reality.

I think at some point instead of reorienting, he would just become disoriented. He might even just start display confusion, flashbacks, not sure what he’s feeling because he’s just been exposed so many different narratives that it becomes hard to adhere to one of them and call it his own.”

As promised I repost here what I already said (updating it a litle bit) in the previous Katniss Everdeen thread :

I've seen it !!!
OMG of a movie it is ... LOVED it !!!
Time has has passed now since I've seen it and I still can't get out of it or it can't get out of me ...
Now many of you have seen it yet so I will talk about the powerful and significant scenes I already cherish very much (all the pearl scenes, District 12 (1st time), the Hanging tree moment/song, Finnick kinda "forced" her to realize how much she loves Peeta saying it out loud, in fact all the scenes (so many) in which Katniss is shown vulnerable (the acting being beyond everything there), the big spectacular scenes too (lumberjacks scene, dam scene, bombing district 13 scene ...) and so on ...
I 'll have to see it again (possibly more than once) before the dvd release ... too far from us ...

Talking about Jennifer's performance it is beyond perfection
The Hunger games franchise is supposed to be considered action movies which it is yes but so not only and here Jennifer's performance as the leading lady of the movie would worth to the least an Academy award nomination (if not a winning for it) if only the academy would be able to pass beyond its prejudices against certain kind of movies ...
Does a nom for best actor/best acress ever happen beyond drama and comedy movies ?
For example Naomi Watts in The impossible it was considered 1st a drama even if what she was going through in it is extremely physical and adventurous to the least ...

And I SO agree with this review about Mockingjay being a war movie and not (only) an action movie.
What it says about Katniss being damaged and all that it can implicate is so right on my non-reader opinion I don't understand how it can't be more obvious to more critics and viewers ...

And what to say about this year before the 4th and last part of the Hunger games tri/quadrilogy ... what a torment in the making this wait is already ...

The last few weekends have been spent Christmas shopping but next weekend, seeing this movie is my plan. Can't wait!! I've seen the first two multiple times, hehe.

It's never gonna' happen. Best not to get to tied up in it. Jennifer's performance in MJ Part. 1 is one of the best she's ever given, which is saying something. As I wrote in my review...

It would be very easy for Jennifer Lawrence the movie star to overwhelm the film. For the goofball interviews, paparazzi stalking’s, and heinous privacy invasions to be all we see. But Lawrence’s talent is far more robust than all the vacuous celebrity horse manure she’s forced to navigate these days and quite efficiently might I add. This is an actress of preternatural capacity and, (yes, Donald Sutherland) even genius, giving what is very possibly her best performance yet in this series. Lawrence disappears entirely, subsumed by Katniss Everdeen, who in this installment is wounded and broken perhaps to the point of impotence. There’s a danger given how she’s written here, that the character might play as simpering or even petulant, but Lawrence provides so much authenticity and raw emotive power that all we do is feel for Katniss, and root for her to find her strength again.

Yeah, but wasn't that the last film in the series. Plus it wasn't identified as YA like most feel or think THG are. Which they really aren't. Comparing THG and twilight should be a crime. Literally.
