She certainly gives it a shot in the arm.

Here's a fun question to consider: Will Joy pass a reverse Bechtel Test?
  1. Are there two or more named male characters?
  2. Do two of these men talk to each other?
  3. Do they talk about something other than a woman?
  1. Yes. Joy's father, husband, and son have names. As does Bradley Cooper's HSN guy and maybe her extortionist and her business rival.
  2. Unknown. None of the trailers presented anything but female-female or female-male interactions.
  3. Even if two men talk, they are most likely talking about Joy. I could see maybe Cooper talking to another HSN underling about sales but will that sale talk involve Joy and does such an underling even have a name?

Conclusion: It won't pass or just barely.

Should be a fun awards season. Last year was boring without Jen.
I know a lot of people said it was boring this year without it.

Like her character says in AH.

This has always been an interesting one for me, because if the movie's called Spider-Man for instance, guess who everyone's going to be talking about. That's just the way stories wortk, if they want to hold their focus.

If two characters do happen to be in a conversation that isn't about the lead character, then it should be about, or have impact on, the plot.

Obviously ensemble's work differently, and in those cases the women should not simply be defined by the men in their lives, but what this really calls attention to for me, is how rarely it is that a movie is actually about a woman. I'd be in agreement with you, Joy won't pass a reverse Bechdel test. If there's a single scene in that movie that isn't about her, then it probably doesn't belong in the movie.

From Deadline's The Contenders :

Quote:
Clip from Joy just played. De Niro and Lawrence were central, but Virginia Madsen as J-Law’s shut-in mother stole the scene. Full on early 80s kitsch with large glasses and episodes of classic soaps.

Jen can't steal the scenes anymore, because now she's the focus. Ha Ha!

Plus Fox have now denied that repeatedly. This rumour was I think wishful thinking from DOR detractors and nothing more. The fact that they've shifted a screening doesn't mean a lot to me. We'd do well not to over focus on it.

Perhaps you're right, and it's a move to focus instead on SAG, or perhaps it's just a meaningless rescheduling. Eitherway, what really matters is that they get the screeners out on time. They'll have to hold events and screenings to get the buzz up and schmooze the various guilds and awards organisations, but of primary importance is that they get the movie watched. That means screeners, and they need to be going out soon. Like this week...
