Nice compliment but it's from a Lionsgate guy (THG). And frankly, I don't know that I buy it anymore. Not just the usual that Jen hasn't proven it yet but can do so this Christmas with Passengers, but maybe that no young stars have much power to "open" films or "draw" fans simply on their name. I was reading recently some talk about this and Joel Silver has a very plausible theory. (He was talking about the Geri-action films aka the Liam Neeson phenomenon.) That the younger generations don't go the theaters that regularly and more for the franchises, not really for the stars. The only box office draws remaining are the older movie stars like Cruise, Denzel, Bullock, etc. and they really only draw the over-35 crowd.

Passengers may be a big hit but maybe just because it's a good film with good actors. True box office draws should pull ticket buyers to mediocre films.

i don't agree that 'tom cruise' can still bring in the box office numbers, too much baggage and weirdness, plus he has that dead eyes syndrome. i think they meant to say Brad Pitt instead, because he can still bring in the crowds.

Ridiculous. Brad Pitt has never been big box office. Never. He's had one middling hit in the last seven years with the rest losing money. Cruise's films never lose money.

ETA: Pitt's had a lot more success as a producer than an actor recently.

Yeah, there was some article written last year about how Tom Cruise hasn't had a box office flop in like 30 years. There is weirdness that surrounds him, and he's kind of become a punchline since 2005, but people will still see his movies regardless.
