▮ Synopsis

Based on Jeanette Walls' 2005 memoir recounting her and her siblings' unconventional, poverty-stricken upbringing at the hands of their deeply dysfunctional parents.

Jennifer Lawrence In Talks To Star After Lionsgate Buys Rights To Jeannette Walls Memoir

Quote:
Now it looks like Jennifer Lawrence will play you.
How about that! I wondered, how could someone so gorgeous play some poor-white-trash ragamuffin from West Virginia? Then I read she had been bullied as a kid, and a lightbulb went off: We have more in common than we realize. She’s been able to tap into that for these performances as this tough chicky-poo who also has this vulnerability. I also heard that her amazing mom said to her, “You have to read this.” As awestruck as I am by Jennifer, I want to meet her mom.

She would play Jeannette Walls. I'm assuming during her late teens and twenties (we see her as young as three in the book).

I didn't put her name in the title because it's quite likely that the character in the movie will have a different name.

A memoir doesn't generally have what you'd call a plot structure, and films tend to need one. Even if it's just the barest hint of one. This generally requires that certain specifics of the tale be altered or re-purposed. Events that in reality occurred years apart might happen within days of each other for instance. Two or three different characters might get merged into one. Same too, with locations.

As a result, it can often be the case that the filmmakers decide that what they're making is a fictional dramatization of real events, and so bestow fictional names on the characters to make that explicit.

This is what's happened with American Hustle for instance.

On the other hand, they might decide to stick with everyone's real name, I don't know...

Well, Jeannette has a younger brother and sister, but she's really the middle child, with her sister Lori being the eldest.

Well, yeah there's no director attached yet, so it might never come about...

... but I thought, let's be optimistic.

From Vogue article:

Quote:
In the meantime, she has no plans to slow down anytime soon. One of the projects she’s most excited about, she says, is producing the film version of Jeannette Walls’s blockbuster memoir The Glass Castle. When I mention that I’ve always thought of Walls as an old-fashioned forties throwback, with her coiffed red hair and big, toothy smile, she says, “Yes, those are the things I’m trying to take out of the movie.” I ask her to explain, and it turns out that Lawrence is going to bring some of her own true-grit authenticity to the part. “Jeannette wanted to fit in a polished world, so she’d shower all the time because she never felt clean,” Lawrence says. “I find that, to watch somebody for two hours, you want her to have a little dirt on her, to be a little tacky, you know? I feel like you like those people more.”

It's an interesting exchange, because the memoir certainly paints a picture of a girl/woman with some dirt on her. Later in life though, as she tries to free herself from her - let's just call it unorthodox - childhood, she does get quite hung up on cleanliness. Which is certainly understandable...

It's interesting also that the article only talks about Jennifer producing. I assume she still plans to star, but the article's failure to spell that out got me wondering...

I'm wondering too, if Buffy alum, Marti Noxon is still on tap for the scripting duties on this one. It would certainly seem to be right inside her wheelhouse.

Still no director. Actually, this could be the perfect film for Jen to reunite with Debra Granik. That would be cool.
