See? Did I knot tell you this was going to happen? Especially after they moved the Margot Robbie film to that spot. See I know things. You should all listen to me.

It wasn't just Thor. But also Justice League. But I am both mad and sad. Glad its away from other stuff, but sad we'll have to wait longer.

... and I'm wrong about Deapool anyway (bloody Americans, writing dates backwards), but Tomb Raider's two weeks later, and I have a suspicion that one might actually end up something of a hit. Two weeks is a solid buffer though, so that's pretty good.

The real advantage as I see it, because there's always going to be competition, is the additional post-production time and the fact this takes Red Sparrow out of the Awards season window, eliminating the kind of chatter that seems to follow Lawrence relentlessly, regardless of project.

Oh, bloody hell. Piss off you wankers!

I don't ever think there was any awards talk of this to start. I mainly seen it for mother!

Been a while since the last Tomb Raider movie. I see it doing just okay in the US. but blowing up the box office overseas.

From Indiewire:

Quote:
On the would-be Oscar front, Fox also has Hany Abu-Assad’s (“Paradise Now”) “The Mountain Between Us,” an adaptation of the Charles Martin novel starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba; Red Sparrow,” an adaptation of the novel by former CIA officer Jason Matthews starring Jennifer Lawrence as a Russian woman who is trained to become a seductress in the Soviet security service; and the animated “Ferdinand,” the story of a soft-hearted bull that wants to find his family. Voice talent includes John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Gina Rodriguez, Bobby Cannavale, and David Tennant.
No reason to think that couldn't have gotten more pronouced come November.

The series pedigree is what's most likely to do the new movie damage. Those movies are not good, and are considered to be fairly ridiculous. Couple that with Vikander's name recognition being modest at best, and there's certainly reason to think this could blow away like smoke.

However... the recent game reboot re-imagined a far more grounded scenario - which clearly took a leaf out of Naughty Dog's Uncharted playbook - and a heroine less the product of male fantasy and more inspired by the likes of Katniss Everdeen, and an understanding that there's an audience of women out there looking for representation in the action/adventure genre they can be proud of. All that had the effect of rehabilitating the game series, and it's that version which the new movie is aiming to adapt for cinema screens. If they manage to do it well, I can see critics eating it up and sending audiences to theatres with a big ole stamp of approval. If the movie falters however - which is certainly possible given its creative team - it might just get dismissed as yet another failed video game adaptation, and we're back to it blowing away like smoke.

In any event, the two week buffer between Red Sparrow and Tomb Raider gives the former plenty of time to make its mark, and earn its coin, regardless of what happens with the latter.

Hey, they took leaves first.

There was a little chatter elsewhere, but Indiewire were the only ones to make that supposition in their Cinemacon report of the Fox panel.

Point is: with Matthews being seen as an American John LeCarre (which is being far too generous IMO), the subject having a real world resonance, and the cast being filled with top drawer acting talent, it's certainly conceivable that chatter like this might have grown as the film neared release.

Good thing then, that it's not inside the awards window anymore. If it does end up in that conversation now, it will be because it's just too exceptionally good to be ignored. Which I doubt we'll see happening.

I guess so. Might be a case of woulda, coulda, shoulda.

You think the marketing campaign will be pushed back. Or still on schedule. I was thinking they release something with the new Planet Of The Apes movies. Still think its possible?

Nah, first trailer won't show up now until around the time the movie was originally scheduled to release.

October/November-ish. Maybe September, at the earliest.
