i read that 2008 script too, ugh. if the Avalon AI had ejected all 4,998 passenger pods into space, to save them from the fusion-reactor explosion, they would have died regardless, frozen dead in deep space. what a horrible ending. even if Jim and Aurora had saved the ship, there would have been no one left to land it on Homestead 2, or hear/see their life story for those 90 years, as the AI would have ejected the 257 crew pods also, minus Gus Mancuso the 258th who woke up helped Jim and Aurora, but died valiantly with his contributions ultimately in vain.

i can see why it took a few years and rewrites to get the final script approval, there had to be some light at the end of the tunnel, some hope and positivity for the couple, even with the betrayal and overreaching narrative of the slowly failing ship. the final script was the right one. i only wish there had been a few more short scenes of the 88 years of Jim and Aurora's beautiful life together, maybe a teaser hint of the child they did have, and the supported theory that they put their daughter in the autodoc, and she lived to complete her mother's dream of the first journalist/writer to bring back a Pulitzer from the stars.

Script I read ended with them landed on homestead and the doors open and kids ran down of all races. And at the end show a thing of Gus and then ends with a picture of Jim and Aurora from the photobooth.

i never read any of that script.


the one i read was the original 2008 script written for the Keanu Reeves/Anne Hathaway version, that both eventually dropped out of because of director issues, and the script was way too dark. also, there was another rewrite where Jim dies saving the ship, leaving Aurora all alone, and a year later after going a bit crazy, Aurora finds Jim's pod-book and wakes up another passenger, starting the cycle all over again. very dark script, if you ask me, definitely not a money-making story.

I've seen a ton of people actually wished that was the ending. Or Jim goes crazy and tried to murder Aurora from space madness and she kills him. Which the movie was never meant to be.

and I think it was Rachel McAdams and not Anne Hathaway.

yeah i saw those fan fiction versions on the net, but the Aurora opens a pod circular suspense dark ending, was seriously considered at one point while KR was still attached to the project. that original script went through 3 or 4 iterations in the 2008-12 time period before Columbia/Sony bought the rights.
