Oh god that gifset and all the feelings I had watching that ep.

I agree. I'm okay with them dealing with the whole drama of Sir Richard & Lavinia. What I didn't like was the fact that Lavinia had to die just so M&M can happen. It was obvious that the thing with Mary & Sir Richard was going to be a marriage of convenience and wouldn't last even if Matthew & Lavinia end up together. Lavinia was nice & sweet and I don't think she deserved to die. It was between Cora & Lavinia and we all know that Cora wasn't going to die.

I think I would prefer for Lavinia & Matthew to push through with the wedding only for Matthew to realize that he still loves Mary and doesn't go through the wedding which will hurt Lavinia. And probably because of that, Matthew doesn't want to be in a relationship with Mary just yet.

I do like that we got the wedding and yes, at least we got a wedding whereas for my other couples, they don't even get to walk down the aisle.

All in all, it could have been a really perfect OTP until the end if Matthew had just lived. That was the largest blow to this ship.

Sometimes I wished they left Matthew's exit on the show open-ended like he went on a trip but went missing so we can still have the character back in some capacity. I know that I've been in denial since forever but D.A. should have ended with M&M happily ever after.

If Matthew had gone missing, Mary's life and really all of the Crawleys' lives would have been in limbo. I'm not sure that would have been a good thing. Mary's love life has always been at the center of the show so that couldn't have been pursued if he had gone missing. Also, there's no guarantee Dan Stevens would have returned to the show in any capacity so I'm afraid no satisfactory conclusion could have been obtained. They only way for them to live happily ever after is if the show had ended after they had George in S3. The show is way too popular for it to be done after S3. It's unfortunate Dan Stevens left the show but I would have hated to see it end for everyone, actors, crew and fans alike, due to his decision.

Mary and Matthew will always be an iconic couple, the original. It's too bad their story had to end prematurely.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Having him missing will most likely put everyone in turmoil, he's the heir presumptive so that will put some dent on the entail. It also made sense to have George if Matthew will die. If it wasn't for George, who inherits Downton upon Robert's death? I know the show won't be around to see George all grown up but I can see how this will all boil down to him and probably telling stories to his children about his family.

I know.

Matthew has lost all hope of living (and being very dramatic about it) and Mary was trying to be strong, not crying in-front of him. Though she lost it when she found out that he might not be able to walk again.
