Gwen Dawson

Gwen Dawson (played by Rose Leslie) was a housemaid at Downton. She is the daughter of a farm-hand. Ambitious, she decides that she no longer wants to work in service and saves up her money to buy a typewriter to take a correspondence course in typing and shorthand. When her typewriter is discovered by Miss O'Brien, she informs the whole staff and Gwen's plan to leave service to become a secretary is the cause of much discussion above and below stairs. Lady Sybil quickly befriends Gwen and tries to help her get a job as a secretary. In August 1914 they are successful and Gwen wins a position at a telephone firm. She does not return in the second series and is replaced by Ethel.

Rose Leslie

Rose Eleanor Arbuthnot-Leslie (born 9 February 1987) is a Scottish actress.

Leslie was born in Aberdeen, and grew up in Lickleyhead Castle, her family's 15th century ancestral seat, before moving to England for school. Her father is Sebastian Arbuthnot-Leslie,and her mother is Candida Mary Sibyl "Candy" Leslie (née Weld). Leslie is the third of five children. Her parents own the 12th century Warthill Castle in Aberdeenshire. Her great-great grandfather was Guillermo de Landa y Escandón, who served as Mayor of Mexico City. She was educated at the local primary school in Aberdeenshire, and then the private Millfield School in England, before spending three years at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, graduating with a BA in 2008.

Leslie made her debut in the 2009 television film New Town, for which she won the Scottish BAFTA for Best Acting Performance – New Talent Award. In September and October 2010, she appeared at the Globe Theatre in Nell Leyshon's play Bedlam. She appeared as Gwen Dawson, a housemaid, in the first series of the 2010 ITV television drama Downton Abbey. In 2012, she began playing the wildling Ygritte in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones.

I really, really liked Gwen. I was kind of sad when she left, but at the same time really glad she had such an awesome storyline and a great reason to leave.

Yeah it was sad to see Gwen go, but at least we know she is going off to a better place for her.

And she really pursued a dream of hers, she doesn't want to be in service forever, so that's fine. I also love that Lady Sybil was very supportive of her decision.
