Sybil Crawley

Lady Sybil P. Branson (née Crawley) (born 1897) is the youngest daughter of Robert and Cora Crawley, the Earl and Countess of Grantham. Sister of Ladies Mary and Edith, wife of Tom Branson, mother-to-be to her and Tom's first child, and future sister-in-law of Matthew Crawley.

She is the family rebel and is a very politically conscious woman who considers the lives and feelings of the underprivileged. She is removed from any family issues regarding money and inheritance. She doesn't care about her family's money, which is realistic, because due to the inheritance line she is unlikely to get much of it anyway.

Unlike the rest of her conservative family, Sybil is very political and believes in civil rights, especially votes for women. During the war, like a lot of other suffragettes, Sybil stops fighting for the vote, out of respect for the men off at war. Branson thinks this is wrong, saying that Sylvia Pankhurst was all for fighting for these rights.

After receiving notice of the death of another young man, with whom she used to dance, Sybil can no longer stand waiting around for the war to finish. After telling Isobel that she wants to do real work instead of meaningless tasks, she suggests becoming a nurse. Before she leaves, Isobel suggests that Sybil should get some basic skills like cooking and making her bed.

Sybil asks Mrs. Patmore and Daisy for help, this seems like a big task, as Sybil can't even properly fill up a kettle. Sybil leaves for training shortly after and Cora realises that this is something she needs to do. By 1917 Sybil is fully trained and feels useful for the first time in her life, saying that she could never go back to her life before the war.

Jessica Brown Findlay

Jessica is the daughter of a teacher's assistant and a financial advisor. She trained with the National Youth Ballet and the Associates of the Royal Ballet. Aged 15, she was invited to dance with the Kirov at the Royal Opera House for a summer season.

She attended Furze Platt Senior School in Maidenhead. At the end of her GCSEs, Brown Findlay was accepted to a number of ballet schools but chose to go to the Arts Educational School, because of the A-level courses it provided and its pastoral care. She attended for two years and in her second year had three operations on her ankles, the last of which went wrong. Waking up from the anaesthetic, she was told she would never dance again. She said that she always had acting in the back of her mind, but was never really able to go out and try it.[3] After encouragement from an art teacher, she applied for and got onto Tring Park School (Hertfordshire) and then onto a Fine Art course at St Martin’s. While there, she took up acting classes.

Findlay was cast in the lead role of Emelia in the film Albatross, directed by Niall MacCormick. She was subsequently cast in two episodes of the E4 programme Misfits and in Downton Abbey. She appeared in the second episode of Channel 4's Black Mirror. In 2012, she became the face of Dominic Jones' jewellery line and was cast in Not Another Happy Ending by John McKay, and in the miniseries Labyrinth, based on the novel of the same name written by Kate Mosse, portraying Alaïs Pelletier. In 2012, she was cast as Beverly Penn in a film adaptation of the novel Winter's Tale.

There is a new article about her in the Times of London. Lovely picture. Says she is the best thing about Winters Tale.

But she says she doesn't have anything lined up after Frankenstein wraps filming. Ugh, does that mean we have to wait months and months to know what she is doing like we did last year before all of those new things were announced around the same time?

Of course she said she faced an "abyss of unemployment" after she left Downton but she quickly got four roles.

I hope she is just not saying what roles she is considering. She must have options! Or maybe she is just taking a break for a few months>

Her plate will be full regardless. Once Frankenstein is wrapped in April she'll be promoting Jamaica Inn before Easter and then by that time something will have popped up. Then promote Posh in the late summer before it's release in September. I have no worries about her work prospects.

I shouldn't but I am a worrier. I think she really keeps things close to the vest. She is SO private!

INteresting to see she said she could be going to all the events but she doesn't want to. So clearly they want her there, but she's not interested. I wish she would do it SOMETIMES. LOL.

Jessica Brown Findlay: What Downton’s Lady Sybil did next | The Times

http://www.irishtimes.com/culture/fi...tale-1.1698725

This review from the Irish Times is interesting. It says the film is silly, but that everyone does his/her best with the "doomed material." Then gives it four out of five stars! LOL. I guess he/she enjoyed it despite finding it silly? Must have just loved Jessica and the love story so much…..

Zalebs Mobi - Girlfriends' Getaway: Winter's Tale

I am posting this because it is a GOOD review and doesn't think it's being clever by trashing something.

Ugh, the UK papers (the two I saw) are being downright nasty about the movie. They don't say anything negative about the acting, just about the plot, dialogue, etc. And one said "JBF must have hoped for a better start to her film career than this." Well, of course she did! But IDK, just based on those couple of reviews it seems like the English papers were enjoying trashing it. A lot of US critics panned it but took the time to give credit where credit was due to the actors.

Sorry I won't post them because they annoy me too much. I am too sensitive about it but they seem particularly mean-spirited about it or something. Maybe that's just the way they always are, but they seem to be pushing it as far as possible.

It's interesting to me that the US reviewers liked/loved Jess for the most part even thought they did NOT like the film. The UK reviewers have one of their own making her Hollywood debut and they won't even acknowledge her performance or potential at all. WTF is that?

But the commenters on the one article (the others didn't have comments) disagreed with the reviewer and said they liked the movie, for the most part. So there's that critic/audience divide again.

At least this one has the decency to say "job well done" on the acting! Sorry, this is a bummer. I am sure she cares what they think, and all the praise from reviewers across The Pond isn't enough to take the sting out it.

This is what an author from Salon Magazine said about the trouble at the heart of the movie:

An overpriced vanity project in which a well-connected Hollywood insider with lots of celebrity friends seeks to soothe his private grief. That’s actually what seems peculiar and individual and redemptive about it.

That's pretty much it. This was a passion project, he was determined to make it. And he said when his wife died while he was writing it became all that mattered. It's interesting that it comes across in the film (which it does). I did enjoy it but I see what the writer is saying.

But the fact is he chose Jessica to play this role, which is obviously a meaningful one to him. Beverly sort of represents love (Peter too, but I'd say Beverly more so) and he thought Jessica was a "phenomenon" who had the "transcendent" quality to pull that off. Which she does. I know casting people won't care about the script and dialogue and concept, etc., of the film. They'll just look at her performance and potential for a role, which is what matters most to her at this stage of her career.

Still, I feel badly for them. She must be grateful to him for giving her the chance and it has to hurt to see people mocking him/it. For Colin too.

Ugh, sorry. Had to vent.

A New York Winter's Tale - review and trailer | Films | Entertainment | Daily Express

This UK review finally says at the end that Jess and Colin portrayed the love story very well. Nice of him to acknowledge it.

Lullaby has a release date: June 13th. Someone posted the poster on Tumblr. Jess's name right on there!

Great news. This is a modern role, totally different to Beverly. Good release date with a hot lead in Amy Adams. Who might very well win an Oscar next month.

It will be a limited release, low-expectation in terms of Box Office, but that's better. So long as it gets decent reviews and Jess follows her good reviews for WT with yet another show of her skills with a talented cast? Even if she doesn't get great reviews for her own performance, if she just holds her own with the rest she'll be fine.

Then Posh in September and Frank in January? Lots of momentum!

First Look: Lone Scherfig's New Film 'Posh' About Oxford's 'Riot Club' | FirstShowing.net

And here is the first picture from "Posh"! Jess isn't in it (just the boys) but it's still exciting. The director said the film is tough and dramatic. Jess has a smallish but important part that should give her some great dramatic material.

September 19th in the UK, and probably shopping the film festivals for a US distributor in the fall. I think it has good potential to get a limited US release, with that cast and topic.
