Don't know if anyone noticed but in 2x02, when Carson is ill and Mary comes by to see how he is. Mrs. Hughes just comes waltzing in without knocking. Always made me wonder whether there was more than friendship between those two.

If the number of fanfics about this pairing is any indication, they must have a pretty big number of "shippers." I'm always surprised by how many fics I see on fanfiction. net for them, considering they're not actually a couple! Not sure how I feel about them being a "couple," but certainly I like their interactions. Downton would fall apart without them -- or so they like to think.
