Lydia, I love how you touched on the point that based on Bay's experiences, she expected that since everyone preferred Daphne & chose Daphne over her, that she was expected the same of Emmett. However, as we know, Emmett chose her nor only over Daphne but of all people. I think that one of the core themes of the show is history vs. choice/free will. It's been brought up many times. Does history mean past experiences only? Does it mean that past experience predetermine our actions or lick us into a particular course, thus keeping one in a comfort zone & settling for the status quo? Hence, according to Regina "history always wins". And is this why Daphne tells Bay she doesn't even know Emmett, thus laying a claim. At some point, haven't we all started off as strangers? Isn't history then a series of future events that eventually make a past? Does free will even play a role in shaping our own destinies that one day become history at all or are we just slaves to our past settling for the future? As a history major in college, we do not define history as the study of the past? Nor do we define it as studying the past so as not repeat the past. Our definition is one based in sociology. We study history to simply learn about our identities as individuals and as a society ... to understand why we are the way we are. History explains who we are, but doesn't limit us ... as new experiences shape us. This is a true philosophy shared by the academics of the discipline of history. I love how S@B uses the term"history" & it's various meanings to juxtapose Emmett & Daphne's relationship with the burgeoning romantic relationship between Emmett & Bay. Does past experience box the individual in to settling in one's present and future? Or, does our past only define us as individuals with the potential to grow? And in education, we have a saying: true learning can only occur when we are challenged. That truly is Bay & Emmett. Sorry if I've rambled. Work was tiring today. __________________
