The quotes are actually all in the first post and you opened the thread I haven't seen more, I'm new!

"...at the end of the pilot, it's scripted "A look between Bay and Emmett." At the end, as he pulls up on his motorcycle to take Daphne away, there's a look scripted between Emmett and Bay.
A lot of viewers picked up on that pretty early on when I read the response, like "Oh, did I sense something between them?" So it was something I had always planned."-Lizzy Weiss

and all of Vanessa's quotes :

"I love Bay and Emmett." -Vanessa
"They're so similar and so different and I love that relationship." -Vanessa
"I think they're both very intense people and passionate people" -Vanessa
"I think they've been in love for a long time" -Vanessa
"They have a relationship that’s kind of the great love of the show" - Vanessa
"She's still in love with him. She's madly in love with him" - Vanessa
"He's the love of her life " - Vanessa
"Bay and Emmett [are] such a part of the show in a way that ties the show together" - Vanessa

Aw, unfortunately most of those quotes were said at the ending of Season 1A (Episodes 1-10 of the series). Lizzy Weiss (showrunner) and Vanessa Marano (Bay) have been far less optimistic about Bay & Emmett's chances, since Emmett cheated on Bay, during Season 1B (Episodes 11-22).

Actually, Lizzy Weiss seemed fairly neutral until this last season. In her interviews at the end of Season 4B (Episodes 84-93), I feel her words are pessimistic. They don't block out all hope, because why would Lizzy Weiss do that? Obviously, she wants to hold onto Bay & Emmett fans, as long as she can. But in interviews, I do feel Lizzy Weiss is preparing the audience for the possibility that Bay & Emmett might not end the series together.

After all, Lizzy Weiss believed the Season 4B Finale might very well be her series finale, and she was perfectly fine with the series ending, while Bay & Emmett's coupledom was completely decimated.

Yeah, unfortunately, Lizzy Weiss does not seem to need Bay & Emmett to be a couple in the end. I have serious doubts that she wants a "happily ever after" ending for her series. She seems more into realism, from what I can tell. I have no idea what her ultimate message about love might be. Every time I believe I have discerned some small kernel of wisdom, she negates it.

Here's a video clip of Gilles Marini (Angelo) and Vanessa Marano (Bay) when they participated in an interview right before Season 2A (Episodes 31-40) premiered. Vanessa clearly explains her feelings about Bay & Emmett after the cheating. Up until now, she has not wavered from this position and doesn't seem likely to do so.

The interview is almost 9 minutes long. If you are in a hurry, it gets more interesting at the 2:30 mark. Emmett's name is first mentioned around the 3:55 mark. After Emmett cheats, Vanessa no longer supports Bay & Emmett's relationship. In the years that follow, her interviews become even more negative.

But Gilles still supports Bay & Emmett's relationship, and I love him for that.

Here's the video clip:

I still liking making fanart for these two.

So....

Quote comes from Kodaline's "High Hopes," which I ironically heard for the first time in a Luke/Lorelai from Gilmore Girls video. Just thought it was funny considering VM's connection to GG.

I don't have high hopes for them this season. I don't not have hope....I'm not sure. The nagging urgency I felt for them to reconcile after their first breakup four years ago isn't there now. I don't think that means I have given up, as I'll always ship them for who they were, but where I thought LW would go back then versus where I see it going now also plays a factor in having hope for Bay/Emmett.

It doesn't hurt like it did. Doesn't make me angry or upset. I'm just....kind of rolling with it.

Really I just enjoy making fanart I like the idea of Bay/Emmett in fanfiction and such because they feel safer there, if that makes sense.

In LW's world, they're not even unsafe. She just doesn't seem to care. I don't know. It's an odd predicament, to sort of be shipping a couple, but not really shipping. I feel like I'm on some kind of shipping hiatus. I don't ship them with others, but right now, they are kind of off to the side, but given the right set of circumstances, yeah, I could get excited about them again. Excited as I was back in 1B? Probably not.

Sorry. That was a long convoluted answer to your question about me having high hopes!

That makes perfect sense, all of it. Thank you for sharing it.

I agree that I don't have high hopes for them this season and the nagging urgency for them to reconcile is gone. I believe there is at least a 50/50 chance of Bay and Emmett ending the series as a couple, or at least with the promise of a possible future. (The latter scenario is probably more likely.)

It's definitely different from where I thought Bay and Emmett would go, after the night that they first made love.

I don't want Bay and Emmett thrown together at the end, for the sake of throwing them together. That's my fear, and it's the reason I find it impossible to ship them anymore.

But if I knew that the writers were willing to do the hard work of bringing them back together, and if the writing was going to have depth and quality to it, then yes, I would be all for it. I don't have much, if any, faith that the writers are willing to write that kind of story for Bay and Emmett.

As you say, Lizzy Weiss and the writers with her do not care about Bay and Emmett's relationship. The writing itself, and the things said in interviews and social media, all of that makes it painfully obvious that Bay and Emmett's relationship is a nuisance to them. I'd even go so far as to say they feel Bay and Emmett's relationship is a noose around their necks, strangling them, cutting them off from their artistic freedom.

That's sad to me. Bay and Emmett are the most beautiful, meaningful part of the story. They have been from the pilot episode. And it's painful to sense that the writers regret creating them, almost as if Bay and Emmett were a necessary evil, but one that they resent for being so popular.

That will never make sense to me. If any writer is at all interested in ratings (and they ALL should be), then Bay and Emmett's popularity should have felt like a godsend.

I'll never understand why Lizzy Weiss treats their relationship with such condescension and disdain, as if she is superior to anyone who cares about something so beneath her.

Well, newsflash: There's nothing lowly about Bay and Emmett. They have always had a depth that none of the other stories on the series even come close to touching. Lizzy Weiss can treat Bay and Emmett like the red-headed step child, but they are the most valuable story she will EVER create. I guarantee that.

I agree with all of this too.

I kind of want to just write an open letter to all television writers because I see a trend and it annoys me. I hate that when fans have valid, legitimate complaints about a storyline that happens to surround a couple, then they are written off as simply a fanatic shipper.

It's not just about the ship. It's about the characters. And let's be real, it doesn't help that they really don't allow Emmett to be a person outside of his relationship with Bay. But they don't and that is where Emmett/Sean gets most of his screen time.

That's not to say that people wouldn't be disappointed still because yes, people do
like Bay & Emmett....and what is so wrong with that? Honestly. We all connect to different characters and relationships for a reason. I find it offensive that shippers are placed into this box of like shallow people who are just here to see their couple make out and be pretty or whatever.

One of the reasons I liked Bay and Emmett from the start was because they made each other happy. Obviously I never would have taken an interest if they had this toxic relationship straight off the bat.

I wanted Bay to feel like someone would choose her and put her first and I wanted Emmett to see that there was someone out there who would want to share his culture and who would see him as more than a friend. They were both lost, hurt puppies at the beginning and seeing them be drawn to each other was this really neat experience. I watched them heal each other.

I wanted to see them fight challenges together, but what we got was convoluted drama....for the sake of drama.

We're fans. We're not privy to BTS goings on or outside forces effecting the writing. We only know what we see. So, if you are a writer, of any kind, you have to be prepared to show certain elements that are integral to understanding a plot. If not, we're left to infer.

Yes, I realize scenes get edited and cut. I know that ***** happens. But then you have to a better job of making up for whatever was lost in translation.

Putting a story out there, it's not going to exist in a vacuum. You have the right to put out whatever story you want, but then you have to be prepared that there are some people who are going to be offended, like when you take important plots and just drop them. There are people who are going to feel slighted, and it's completely within their rights to feel that way. When you do a shoddy job, you should expect criticism.

When you take beloved characters/relationships and trash them for no reason and don't put the work in to rectify that, yes, expect that fans won't trust you anymore. And why should they?

When you give flippant interviews that don't answer important questions about character motivation, expect that you're going to get called out on it.

In a nutshell, if you're a lazy writer, don't expect fans to fawn all over you and then get annoyed when they don't "get" your vision.

i really miss these two. i don't expect to see them as a couple again on the show, which is sad. if they end up together, it will be at the end of the series. but i am okay with that as long as there is a good multi-episode build up to get to that final endgame.

How does the meaning of Bay & Emmett's love story change, if they don't end up together?

If Bay & Emmett do end up together, to me, it says:
  • first love is the most important love
  • first love is the one that lasts, the one that matters, the one that a person always comes back to
  • even if your stars happen to be crossed, you can eventually overcome that, if you don't give up
  • some connections are too powerful to let go of, even if you try
  • the only ending that matters is the Hollywood ending, and even if two characters' stars are truly crossed, viewers must see that happily-ever-after ending; no other ending to a love story is acceptable
  • with love, any and every obstacle may be overcome, including the absence of a common culture, emotional strife, personal insecurities, cheating, mistrust, youthfulness, long distance, outside forces and distractions, jealousies, mistakes, and abandonment in especially vulnerable times (whew!)
  • love offers second chances, third chances, fourth chances, etc., in fact, the number of chances with love are never-ending
  • love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things

If Bay & Emmett do not get back together, to me, it says:
  • a love that comes after first love may be important, too; life does exist after first love
  • your first love does not have to be the love of your life; a subsequent love may be the one that matters most, the one you choose in the end
  • sometimes stars are crossed in life, and it is okay to accept that and move on
  • it is possible to let go of love and move on
  • something more than a happily-ever-after ending may exist for us, even in Hollywood; a satisfying conclusion is not dependent on finding our soulmate, but instead, on finding ourselves
  • sometimes life throws obstacles that are too many (or too serious) for the relationship to overcome, but the individual, and his or her love for the other, can persevere, even if the relationship does not survive
  • our number of chances with love may be never-ending, but life is short, and our emphasis should be on living happily in the moment (pursuing work that is meaningful and that resonates with our beings and spending time with family and friends), not on waiting to live happily ever after, in order to feel fulfilled
  • love may not fail, but sometimes, we fail at love, and that's okay

Which set of messages do people like best?

Now that I've typed it all out, I find that I'm not sure yet. I need to give it some more thought.

I saw this blog post, and it reminds me of Bay and Emmett:

True Love Does Fail And That's Okay | The Odyssey
I can guarantee you that what I experienced was love. When they say, "You'll know when you know," they were not kidding. And I don't mean "know" as in "We've been together for four months and I really care about this dude." No, I mean: "This is the man I know I want to spend the rest of my life with because of the way he eats his Hot Pockets and the way he treats his little sister." I knew the moment he told me he was joining the Army so his little sister didn't have to worry for her safety. I still know because it's been a year since our break up and, although I have no intentions of ever getting back together with him, I still love him.

Just because you love someone at one point in time, does not mean you will want to be with them for the rest of your life, forever and ever. People change. That's the sad reality of life. Sometimes the one guy you thought was going to be your rock forever turns into a closed off individual that doesn't really care what you have going on in your life. People change, but memories don't. So just because you love someone now, does not mean you will love the person they are in 20 years. It just means that in 20 years, you will love the person he was when you were together.
But that same blog post also says this:
I really feel for the people that have never been lucky enough to experience a failed love. Although it is a kind of pain that I hope I never have to experience again, it's so good to experience it one time. I learned so much from my first love. I learned that my dreams should always come first. You shouldn't give someone so much of yourself because you'll be lost if they leave. You should always make time for your friends, even if you would rather spend more time with your significant other. Never change your life plans for someone. You know, just to name a few.
And I think all of that is ironic, because Bay didn't defer her dreams for Emmett.

Bay didn't give Emmett so much of herself that she was lost when he left. She missed him, but she was busy performing community service, finishing her art work for the Kansas City artists' showcase, going to a dorm party with Daphne. Bay never refrained from making time for her friends, during her second relationship with Emmett. Bay put herself and her friends before Emmett often.

Heck, Bay chose to go out to dinner with her ex-boyfriend and his dad, rather than celebrating Emmett's acceptance to Gallaudet. Bay chose to put her own happiness, and of course, Natalie & Hilary's happiness, ahead of Emmett's happiness at prom. Bay put Daphne's security, as she was heading to prison, ahead of Emmett's security, as he was heading to a hearing college far from home. Bay recognized (and stood up for) her need to save her sister, and she did not think twice about not including Emmett in that decision.

Bay did not even tell Emmett about her potential to develop aneurysms, and he specifically asked her several times what was bothering her. Bay was not losing herself to Emmett, in their second relationship, not at all.

In fact, that's my biggest complaint.

If the writers wanted to go this route with Bay and Emmett and have them not end the TV series as a couple, then I really needed to see Bay & Emmett go all out with lovey dovey scenes during their second relationship. I needed to see the passion. I needed to see Bay & Emmett lose themselves in each other, so I could understand their need to find themselves alone, later in life.

Instead, viewers were treated to a truly sucky second relationship, one that lacked intimacy and passion. Then, we received a heart-wrenchingly painful breakup, and now, we are left with a need to avoid the cliche happily-ever-after ending, but we never even got to see any happiness along the way.

Is real life void of happiness at every turn?

After four years, does the sum total of happiness Bay & Emmett received in life equal one cute planking scene, a meaningful moment after Cameron's surprise wedding, and rubbing noses at prom?

Is that it?

I would like to have seen some happiness for Bay & Emmett, before they parted ways. I'm sad the writers chose not to give us that in Season 3B.

This weekend, Gil and I worked together to choose Bay & Emmett scenes for a song that we both love. Gil made a beautiful video!

With one viewing, my heart completely belongs to Bay & Emmett all over again.
