I've never seen Katie in anything else before but the way she can act and use the fake deaf accent is amazing.

She is an amazing actress and this is the first time I've seen her. Is the actress not really deaf in real life?! If not, I didn't know that and it makes her acting even more impressive.

She can't totally hear, but she isn't completely deaf. I think she has moments that she is though. I'm not 100% sure. I can't remember what she said in the interviews.

She has a disease called Meniere. It's cause from the inner ear that can affect your balance and hearing. Usually just one ear, however it can be very mild or very chronic. And it's life long and no cure. You can get hearing aids, which Katie does have/use on the show.

I don't know the severity of Katie's. But I do know she started signing in high school because her sister is a ASL teacher, and she loved it so much she just stayed with it. That's why she's so fluent. But she is not deaf and the deaf accent on the show is fake. She works with a coach to perfect it.
