We spent the last month rushing home from work and watching TV like it was a chore, hoping for something to elevate the experience to actual entertainment. That still hasn’t happened yet, but what we saw at NYC Comic Con is about to change all that? And what was that? The screening of the pilot episode of Once Upon a Time.

With Lost, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis showed how well they can weave complex characters and histories together. Now, they are starting with the archetypal characters that our other archetypes have been based on… does it work? Hell yeah! Because you’re already emotionally invested: you’ve got your fingers crossed that your favorites will make it into the line up. And they are just proving their metal: this is the pluckiest version of Snow White I’ve seen so far (I was not expecting her reaction to the Evil Queen’s threat); Rumpelstiltskin has gotten a lot more interesting; and really, what is sexier than a handsome man cradling a baby in one arm as he beats back the bad guys with fancy sword work?

Not to mention the strong performances, especially from Jennifer Morrison (as Emma Swan, in my favorite role for her yet- a no nonsense heroine with a reasonable dose of skepticism), Jared Gilmore (as Henry- the little boy who serves as catalyst for the story and offers up the right amount of earnestness), and Ginnifer Goodwin (who, as Snow White, finally gets to forgo the desperate/needy start her characters usually have to overcome) And K reminded me to give a shout out to a long time favorite of mine, Robert Carlyle, who dominates his scenes as Rumpelstiltskin- just that he hasn’t gotten to show too much humanity yet.

K: I have to agree with B, this is the first pilot of the season that has me genuinely excited about the coming episodes. There is an element of kick-ass girl power that wouldn’t necessarily be expected based on the title and harkens back to my coming of age in the 90′s. I also like that you can make a game of trying to figure out which fairy tale character you are seeing before the big reveal.

Because this show uses variations of characters that are so well known it invites audience involvement. If the show stays this good, I don’t think I will need or want to see either of the Snow White movies in production.
