It was clear since the start of the season they had little interest in Neal or his various relationships.

It's annoying. They lead us on thinking things might get better for him. But nope. They got bored and decided they didn't want him anymore.

At least a part of August still got to live.

It wasn't because they got bored. It was because the shiny new toy needed to take over Neal's exact place. They couldn't just put Neal on the shelf (ie. turn him into a rose, drop him into a portal, put him under a curse) because the place in the canvas would still be his.

Well, I don't think Robin is taking Neal's place. He's just going to be Henry's step dad some day, since he's Regina's soulmate.

And Walsh, he wasn't really around long enough to make an impact.

To be fair though, Robin is the newest addition to the cast.

As for Hook. He doesn't seem to be doing any of the things Neal did. So how could he take his place?

He is but he hasn't gotten much yet and he's mostly in Regina's orbit.

In relation to Emma and Henry. I still like Hook but I am not here for the Henry/Hook scenes...they just remind me why I miss Neal and think he's needed.

it's kind of unfair to say we can't discuss one of the major aspects of Neal's absence in the Neal thread because some people like another character, ESPECIALLY since this is about the writing rather than the character himself.

I'm not arguing that they are similar in character. I'm saying considering Hook, Neal and their connections, it's not difficult to believe that one of them had to go, or at least the writers thought so.
