Admittedly, Emma Swan may seem like a rather unlikely savior. Raised in foster-care, she has struggled most of her life just trying to track down who she is herself, let alone rescue anyone else. Captain Killian Jones is a pirate, known for traveling all over and between worlds. Little Is known about the past of this handsome swashbuckler. But when Milah Fell in with his crew Rumplestiltskin begged Killian to release Milah back to him. The Captain insisted that they duel for her instead. Rumple was too afraid to risk a duel with the deadly pirate, so he left. Years later, after he had become the new Dark One, Rumplestiltskin stumbled upon Captain Jones again. This time he was more than happy to duel. Killian bravely fought a losing battle, but just as Rumplestiltskin was about to tear out his heart, Milah appeared to make a deal. She offered a magical bean to Rumple in exchange for Killian's life. Rumplestiltskin seemed to accept, but when Milah admitted that she had never loved him, he tore her heart out, killing her. Then he cut off Killian's hand to retrieve the bean he held. Killian attacked Rumple with a hook, but it was not enough to hurt The Dark One. The Captain swore he'd have revenge for the murder of his beloved and for his hand. Rumplestiltskin taunted that he would never live long enough to find a way to kill him. But Captain Jones had tricked The Dark One. He still had the magic bean and used it to open a portal to Neverland, where he would never grow old, giving him all the time he needed to plot his revenge. ~ ABC

“My first thought was, 'Well, I'm not old enough to play Captain Hook.' Obviously everybody had that traditional idea of Captain Hook in their minds. Eddie and Adam wanted to go for a slightly younger Captain Hook. I thought it would be a nice way to put a slant on the guy, try and make him slightly more lovable than outwardly evil, which is how he's always been portrayed before. He's just sort of a nasty bad guy in everything else, whereas in this, I wanted people to feel bad for liking him. He is different than any other Hook. It's a fantastic thing to be able to get to play such an iconic character, and be able to do it in a way where I can put my own spin on it. That was a thing that I thought about when I was coming into it. I was a bit worried about whether or not people would respond to this Hook, or whether they would be like, 'He's not like the Hook that we grew up with so we don't accept him.' But people have taken Hook to heart a little bit, which is good.” ~ blastr

"This season in particular, because Hook has really fought for Emma to be true to herself and be the most powerful version of herself, he's earned a tremendous amount of trust from her, and that's what really makes it organic for Emma to feel vulnerable with him. I know that in my own life, I have a strong reaction to people who empower me and say, 'You should be yourself, even if it means making some mistakes.' So the fact that he does that, and isn't at all put off by that, makes it a good place to start a relationship."

"He believed that he could love again when he met Emma and got to know her. He decided to allow himself to feel again, and I think that's really what it all came down to - this idea that he'd spent hundreds of years living with hatred and revenge in his heart for the death of Milah and having met Emma he sort of realized 'Oh my god, I can actually feel for somebody again.'"
Did you always intended to have Hook in love with Emma? Was that something you planned out or was it something that developed because of the actor's chemistry onscreen?
Eddy: Always.
Adam: Always. I mean, listen... You go into these things with the best intentions. That is to say we loved the idea that Hook and Emma would be kindred spirits and that is why we kind of wrote that in the beanstalk episode of season 2. But of course, you know, there's always the chance that there isn't any chemistry. We were very lucky that we feel that Hook and Emma have an enormous amount of chemistry so that kind of allowed us to stick to the plan that we wanted.

Well, to be fair,. I can't really blame Hook. Until recently, Emma hasn't really been all that open with him and even on their date you can see when he asks her out again that he is a little afraid she might say no. I think this situation might force Emma to come to terms with her love for him.
I don't blame him either of course, but I can see the future drama sprouting out of it.
