The really strange thing in this show is that Henry Mills is involved in the *strangest* family relationship imaginable: his grandmother Mary Margaret is also his adopted older stepsister- consider that and you can work out his perplexing family relationships!
Hilarious show to put it simply, and utterly oodles of fun too, but that's one highly *unusual* family; and one that spans hundreds of years in only a few generations too- and it *appears* that Mary Margaret might've gotten yet another stepbrother, I don't know about what happened to Roland Hood, but my guess, and this is my guess, mind you, is that he was adopted by Regina, due in part to her complete delight in parenting that she found with raising Henry- she'd likely want to do it all over again is my guess- and also in part to Roland becoming an orphan... it might also be some sort of penance on Regina's part; since she helped in her past (the deeds of which she seems to hate by the way) to cause him to lose his mom, and then she fell in love with his dad- that's a clue that she wanted the job of being a parent to him.
But I do agree, in this her main rival was her stepdaughter, but they became buddies of a sort- I don't know if girls call their close friends "buddy" but that's a guy's summary of their relationship in Storybrooke during the later seasons. (the relationship between Regina and Mary Margaret, that is)
