I was so excited about them after the sneak peek but also nervous. After what Emma told Snow, Neal could have been a really bad guy.

Thankfully it wasn't that bad. The ending was still sad but Neal thought he was doing the right thing for Emma.

He could have found out later. After Emma went to prison. I don't know, I just can't imagine August being honest about his identity before Emma and Neal were separated.
