No but I think he became a thief because it was the only way to survive and once he started to steal, it wasn't that easy to stop. But it was a very bad decision and both he and Emma paid for it. Although, if it hadn't been for August they would have gotten away with it.

He ruined everything. Even without the watches he would have managed to seperate them.
They almost made it and they were so looking forward to Tallahassee, to "home" and then August had to appear and destroy their dreams. |

That's very true. And it's why we would have needed an explanation as to why he showed up to seperate Emma and Neal. And we also never got to know who told him about Neals real identity. There are too many open questions.
