(On Rumplestiltskin's voice)“There’s no way I could speak in my normal voice while looking so extraordinary and while having this bizarre stuff to say,” the actor reasoned. “I tried many different types of voices and the thing that I landed on was completely by chance, really, thanks to my son. He was wandering though the house making these high-pitched voices and sounds I thought, ‘Rumpelstiltskin has a child-like quality to him, he kind of enjoys gleefully tricking people.’”

There's something about these performances in the past few years. In a slight sense it’s about age but without a doubt it has also given me what I used to call weight. I remember when I was in Scotland and I first started acting with these older actors and they had weight. They didn’t have to act. It was just there. I think I’m finally on that path to gravitas.“

The fact that you’re working harder on the surface seems more difficult, but you get into a way of working where if you’re not allowed to stop and breathe and think about it, you just go on instinctively, which is the way I prefer anyway. (about Mr Gold) “I try to keep him absolutely neutral,” he says. “I almost do [Mr. Gold] in slow motion. It’s the exact opposite of what I’m doing with Rumpelstiltskin. He resonates calm. There’s not many times as an actor you get to play the opposite ends of the scale.”

Many actors look at the costume before the part, and that seems crazy to me. It’s much more fun to be ugly. Not that I think I’m ugly, but I’ve never considered myself good-looking.”

It gave me the opportunity to define this character for a whole new generation… certain parts you play all you’re thinking about perhaps is oh… voice or maybe movement. This was a combination of everything. I had to think about how he was going to move, how he was going to look, how he was going to sound… my six year old son is always wandering about the house with a strange voice saying [random noises] and I was like…”

Time for another Carlyle acting analysis. Watch his face. In the beginning he’s on the verge of sobbing. Look at his head; it slightly pulls forward, he’s swallowing his tears, shoving them down before he can start whimpering and whining like a dying animal. His face is a mask of pain, knowing his only plan of finding his son, the plan he’s been working on his entire life, over 200 years at least, has completely and utterly fallen apart. He can’t leave the town to find Baelfire. Not only do we see total vulnerability and hopelessness in his face, we see agony. His whole body slumps, he’s tired of waiting, tired of failing and most certainly above all else tired of living every day without his son. Then watch him; he looks down, considering, he turns his head, all sadness gone—he’s already scheming, plotting something new. That fast, he’s erased all of his pain and emotions, something he’s far too used to doing, and he’s focused on getting his son back once more. He’s spent his whole life leaping over hurdles and playing chess with everyone around him with the sole intent of recovering his son. Already he’s twelve steps ahead of everyone else, within that split second from inconsolable sadness to the birth of a new idea, his entire outlook has changed. Perhaps, to get the most important person in the world to him back, he can’t simply pack a few maps and leave town, leave everyone behind him. He’ll have to do what he does best, and that’s manipulating everyone he comes in contact with.

That scene reminds me very much of Gold's look in the hospital after Belle shattered the cup. His face was a portrait of agony, bitter pain, grief, anguish, despair, loneliness. He's shattered and feeling hopeless (see the first GIF especially........I have a hard time looking at Gold there)

Then, by the time we see Gold at the Charming's, he's bucked himself up (via anger and determination). He can't stay here as he's doing Belle no good and he's this close to killing Hook, so he's going to find his son and go on the journey with Belle always with him.

We know that Adam has said that Gold is NOT going to sit back and do nothing while Belle is in this condition; he's got a plan.
