I can't believe how naive I was. That's so OOC for me. I always expect the worst, but somehow I didn't this time. I think it's because it made so little sense to kill him off at this point of the story.

I completely agree. Neal didn't even have a single character centric episode. How could his storyline played itself out?

There was still story they could have told with him
