Plus we've had other fairy tale characters for a short time there to enhance the plot Cinderella was there to introduce the deal which led Gold to Manhatten and reflect some of Emma's feeling to giving up Henry

There wasn't enough time in season 3 to give us more of Neals story and it was the last chance to do so. I have no idea how I would have introduced mermaids or Ariel, but Neverland can't have been the only time to do it. It could have waited until season 4 or even season 5.

Yeah, but they've done a backstory to all the other one time characters, too. Cinderella, fairy (Grumpy's), Jimney Crickett, Magic Mirror, Hansesl/Gretel, etc. It wasn't without precedence.

Whether or not it was done well...matter of opinion. Plus Neverland is Eddy's favorite childhood story so he mentioned way back in season 1 he wanted to bring Ariel, but it would have to wait for Neverland.

Ariel isn't the problem here. There were quite a few things that could have waited. Neals story couldn't.

I'm sure there is an interesting story behind it. And we owe a lot to that bug. It deserves its own story.
