There isn't, but to say he had to die to end the circle of cowardice is one of the worst explanations I can think of. It's as if they're completely ignoring everything Neal did in the past seasons. And why should Neal pay for his grandfathers sins? Or his fathers? And if he hadn't, would Henry become a coward as well (ignoring the fact that Neal never was one)?

I wonder if the same rules apply to villains? It doesn't matter if they change, the only way to make sure their children don't become villains is to die a heroic death.

that's because there aren't really any rules. It's just a lame excuse to explain to angry Neal/ST fans why they killed him off.
