I was looking up some things about Desperate Souls when I found out the leader of the knights/soldiers who harass Rumple was the Duke. Somehow, I'd thought he was lower on the totem pole, a soldier with the cushy job of rounding up the new canon fodder who kept out of the fighting himself.

But all this leads to speculation about Rumple's first wife.

This guy is the Duke but he knows all sorts or details about Rumple's life and has personal, degrading nicknames for him.

Now, isn't that a little odd? Rumple - lowly peasant. Other guy - Duke, ruler of lots and lots of peasants - and, I don't know about you, but he didn't strike me as the sort to take a personal interest in any of them.

Put that way, it seemed like there was something personal in the Duke's dislike of Rumple - and the part where he gets very personal is when he talks about Rumple's wife - a wife Rumple may have some reason to think was unfaithful to him.

Ooooh.

The Duke had a thing for Rumple's wife.

I'd say it was one sided and he didn't get what he wanted. He's still smarting over that and taking out his grudge on Rumple and Bae - which would explain why he's so personally involved in taking Bae from his father.

And it puts a slightly new spin on Rumple's time in the army. That's one way to get a guy out of the way. Conversely, if you want to pressure a girl, life or death power over her husband's survival is an effective tool.

But, I still don't know what happened to her

The Duke says she left - but she didn't leave for him.

The situation may have been intolerable and she may have thought running away would protect Rumple from the Duke's ongoing persecution.

If Rumple weren't Rumple, I'd guess that she went to Rumpelstiltskin to make a deal to protect her husband that caused something to happen to her. Maybe she did make a deal like that with the Dark One or some other character.

OMG!!! ME TOO!!! Ok, here's my theory:

Two of the fandom's most popular theories are that August is Rumpel's son, Peter Pan or at the very least, one of the Lost Boys. Well, what if he is all of the above? What if after Rumpel became the Dark One, Bae ran away to Neverland and was then promised protection by the fairies. Maybe this is the reason why Rumpel hates the fairies so much. Maybe Rumpel sees the fairies as the ones who destoryed the relationship between him and his son. This may also explain why Rumpel was so anxious to get his hands on Cinderella's fairy god-mother's wand. Maybe he needed the wand of a fairy to gain access to Neverland. We all know that Peter Pan had a close relationship with the fairies, Tinkerbell in particular.
