I actually think Jen played Emma as missing her friend, Mary Margaret, in all her interactions with her mom. Like she was looking for someone who was no longer there. It added a definite bittersweet element to their later season scenes.

I think they retained some friendship elements, though. Being friends first was a great way to help Emma deal with the abandonment issues she'd had all her life.

I agree with that. I just think all of the issues people had with their friendship not being the same in later seasons was intentionally played.

I agree it was intentional. Their relationship becomes more of a mother/daughter type relationship as it goes along.
