In seriousness though, maybe on some level he enjoys people coming to him. Centuries of manipulation and deal-making has probably made it into quite a powerful habit. Might not even be conscious of it.

I think that's it and the fact that he probably likes to interact with others. He's been alone for most of his cursed life, so having others to deal with even the way he does, is an interaction that keeps him from being so lonely.

Because of plot? Just think of all the ... stuff that wouldn't go down if Gold just locked his door and ignored everyone for a couple of days! They'd have to actually do things for themselves for once! *gasp*

That's probably more accurate! Also, how else could he keep informed about what was going on in the world? If people come to him for nefarious and secret deals, then it must be for stuff they don't want other people to know about. And stuff that people don't want other people to know about is always worth knowing for someone like Rumple.

I was doing some reading on 19th century mourning customs (because I'm doing a fanfic where Bae and Rumple both went to Victorian London [or a slightly AU version I call Viktorian Londyn]).

Anyhow, two things Victorians did when in mourning--

1. Keep the curtains drawn (although I don't think anyone but Miss Havisham would have nailed them closed).

2. Cover all the mirrors.

Obviously, Rumple had other reasons for covering the mirrors--and Belle didn't associate it with mourning, just with self-image problems. I suppose the curtains were because of a mindset sort of close to mourning--or anti-social, will-the-world-just-please-go-away-and-leave-me-alone?-ness. But, I thought it was interesting.

Not that anything would ever get Rumple to tone down his wardrobe, bereaved or not.

Oh, and mirrors were covered because superstition said they were dangerous to souls recently separated from bodies. You could, after all, get trapped in another world. . . .
