I loved to see that dynamic. Because how his father said tat Nick is him. Then he found and fall in love with Ashley, the most unexpected woman, and they got married.

"Love is never what you expect, right?"

And look at Schmidt and Cece, I mean I knew and loved them together since the very beginning but it was also unexpected.

And how they start and end go with their lives are also unexpected too. No one was expecting to see Schmidt&Cece at the end of v-day episode. No one was expecting NJ's kiss. etc etc

So exciting!
