Yeah, you would think it would be harder for him to handle being seperated the more he continued messing with her, but I am thinking maybe it helped him a bit. Maybe it helped him forget about the heartbreak he was going through. Because especially in 3x02 for example when Zoe went to talk to him, he was so sad but then flipped a switch and started messing with her to lighten the mood.

That was an acceptable time for it. In S2 after the breakup wasn't.

He didn't really mess with her much then did he, I mean... they weren't even around each other much

Which as much as we hated it, made sense plot wise.

There were a few times when he did when he made the comment about traveling to the 90's. And also when he told her that her drama was entertainment, but I think it wasn't the type of messing around that he did in S3, So I am not sure if that really counts much.
