Modern Family - 3x12 "Egg Drop" episode discussion

Luke and Manny have a big school project to design the best capsule that would protect an egg in a two-story drop, but when Claire and Jay catch wind of it, their own competitive drives kick in… and eventually take over. Meanwhile, Phil solicits the help of Haley and Gloria to sit as plants in the audience during a huge real estate presentation he has put together, and Mitch and Cam meet with prospective birth mothers and must try their very best to be charming and likeable, on “Modern Family,” WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11 (9:00-9:31 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

The episode was...okay. It's not my favourite but it still had it's moments. Although I think it could have been better with the storylines.

Phil/Gloria/Haley

So Phil has a speech to do for first time buyers since he's the new partner at this real estate agency business. When Claire becomes unavailable, he calls Gloria who agrees to help him out. Along with Haley, she was supposed to be there to help him out and support him of course. But Gloria & Haley decide to wander off and Gloria had some curls and Haley's toes got painted. To their horror (more for Gloria), her car got towed. We all know Gloria's not the best driver out there so that's bound to happen.

She calls Phil when his speech was about to start and obviously can't make it in time so Phil bombed the entire thing. I love the Phil/Gloria part where she was telling him to get angry at her and to not put her on a pedestal because we all know Phil likes her and she looks like she was about to cry telling him that.

Jay/Claire/Luke/Manny

Oh dear, Jay & Claire getting competitive on this ep and it's all because Luke & Manny purposely made their projects a mess so they can help out. Jay was quick to think that Claire was going to help Luke because of their conversation and likewise with Claire. In true form, this was a like father-like daughter kind of thing. Mitch explained it best about Claire in that sofa interview.

Claire even had to go to Alex to help her out. It was more of upstaging her dad and not really about helping Luke anymore. In the end, I have to say that they both did good but they shouldn't be that competitive with each other. I love the Jay/Claire part where he tells her he doesn't discourage her from being that way because he loves her anyways.

And of course Luke & Manny were adorable in this ep doing their egg drop project. They knew they weren't gonna do a bangin' good job at it so what better way than to make their parents think that they do need help with it.

Mitch & Cam

AAAAAHHHH! My favourite part of this ep is them singing "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Elton John. The birth mother wanted them to sing and so sing they did. I've always wanted Jesse to sing on the show and what better way than to have him sing with Eric. Then the birth mom says Mitch has the better voice & Cam was pitchy. Cam's reaction to that was priceless (even that little twitch in his mouth is enough). In the end, they weren't able to impress her and the birth mom decided to keep the baby. They were so happy to have nailed it but it only took one song to change the mother's mind.

I agree with you Lindz it wasn't the strongest episode but it had a lot of nice little moments that I liked. I particularly liked the element where Haley mentions that Phil could never be mad at Gloria and always "puts her on a pedastal". I loved the Jay and Claire moments in that he said he loves her competitive side. Mitch and Cam were absolutely adorable and I'm glad they got Jesse to sing but it was so funny that Cam made her cry when he sang to her. They were so close

The Phil/Gloria. Jay/Claire & Mitch/Cam moments were my favourite as well. Overall I felt that it lacked a genreally good story-telling aspect that is present in most MF episodes. It had it's moments but I was waiting to feel that feeling I felt after watching "After the Fire" and it didn't come.

I think with the last two episodes the stories have been good but haven't had that strong a link, but there's always next week. I still enjoy the episodes so that's the important thing.
