At last night’s premiere party for HBO’s adaptation of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, the cast shared details about their physical transformations and paid homage to Kramer’s activism for AIDS awareness.

During the making of the movie version of Larry Kramer’s play The Normal Heart, about the early-80s onset of the AIDS crisis among gay men in New York City, the entire set shut down for several months so that Matt Bomer, who plays an AIDS victim, could lose 40 pounds. Bomer wasn’t unnerved by making Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons, and the rest of the cast wait for his physical transformation for the movie, which premieres on HBO on May 25. “I knew that I was a part of the story that was much bigger than myself, and that I had a big responsibility on my shoulders,” Bomer told VF Daily at the premiere on Monday. “So any time I was tempted with a Twinkie, I just thought of the boys, and put it down.”

“The hardest thing was probably cooking for our kids, because, you know, the first thing you want is a chicken nugget and French fries,” Bomer said, laughing. He consulted a professional to learn how to prepare his three young children for his dramatic weight loss. “But, you know, they’re hard on me, man, and I think they just have that ‘kid’ imagination, because I think they were expecting me to look like a pancake or something.”
