Yes, it was Varys. But I believe that Barra wasn't yet born when Varys paid people to take Gendry to safety when the time comes. Besides, Varys only knew 7 (or 8?) of Robert's bastards, when he had 16. There were others outside of King's Landing, yes. As far as we know, these were Bella, Mya and Edric Storm. It's highly unlikely that anyone knew about Bella; Mya was safe in the Vale; and Edric Storm was first under the protection of Stannis, and then he was spirited away. And when the Goldcloaks came for Gendry, they weren't THAT far away from King's Landing.

I don't even know what I'm saying, but I hope it made sense xD

Did we ever got a real confirmation in the books that it really was Varys? It's been a while since I read them and I really don't remember.

Ever since they met, I have been shipping them. Their dynamic is fascinating and I love the fact they are both stubborn and sort of the anti-person of their class/responsiblity, with Arya hating the mere ideals of how a woman should grow up to be and Gendry having no need for politics or caring at all about royalty.

Episode 1 had to end at that exact scene I have been waiting for in months! I am soo looking forward to episode 2. I have read somewhere that there are a total of 30-something hours of Gendry-Arya scenes for season 2

I am currently reading A Storm of Swords, and just would like to share a scene from the book:

"Child," said the singer, "put up that sword, and we'll take you to as safe place & get some food in that belly. There are wolves in these parts, & lions, & worse things. No place for a little girl to be wandering alone."
"SHE"S NOT ALONE." Gendry rode out from behind the cottage wall, & behind him Hot Pie, leading her horse. In his chainmail shirt with a sword in his hand, Gendry almost a man grown, and dangerous. Hot Pie looked like Hot Pie.
"Do as she says and LEAVE US be," warned Gendry.

*Makes me feel all mushy inside (lol!)

I had been waiting for this ever since I read the book last year, and I was afraid that scene I had been anticipating for so long wouldn't meet my expectations, but it was absolutely perfect

, so similar to the book. I don't know how many times I've re-watched the Arya/Gendry scene now, I seriously need to stop.

And this is slightly off topic, but I think we need a Hot Pie appreciation thread around here.
