1x06 "A Golden Crown" Episode discussion

A Golden Crown
(1x06 Episode Rewatch & Discussion)

Ned is reinstated as the Hand and sits on the throne while Robert is hunting, but makes a risky, emotional decision that could threaten the stability of the Seven Kingdoms. Meanwhile, Tyrion pleads his case to Lysa at the Eyrie; Joffrey reaches out to Sansa; Robb and Theon come to Bran's rescue in the woods; and Viserys demands that Drogo make good on his payment for Daenerys.

Note: Since the board wasn't around when the series started,
we didn't get a chance to discuss previous episodes.
Every month (or half a month for later episodes), we will create an episode
discussion thread to discuss the episodes we have missed.

Schedule will most like be as follows:
1 - July; 2 - August; 3 - September; 4 - October; 5 - November;
6 - December; 7 - January; 8 - February; 9 & 10 - March

I actually just read through this part of the book today so it sort of refreshed in my head what happened in the episode. Seriously, what a fool Viserys was. I couldn't have been happier to see him go, all I could think was finally

Was it more enjoyable reading it or watching it?

I kind of felt a bit sorry for Viserys, he really didn't have clue

I'll have to remember to re-watch tonight and then comment more.

I loved the different reactions Arya and Sansa have when Ned tells them that they're going back to Winterfell, and Arya's when Sansa is going on about how she doesn't want anyone kind and caring, she wanted Joffrey and then the light when on for Ned and he figured out about the kings kids being bastards.

And on a shallow note, Robb looks very good in this episode

I felt that way while reading it as well but on the show I did feel sorry for him. Harry Lloyd and the writers did an excellent job of making us sympathize with him while at the same time being disgusted by his actions. In a sense, he had a tough life and went through some really terrible things, which shaped him into the person he became but...he made his choices.

Yeah it makes me feel with him a bit in the later books when Dany kinda feels the weight he carried and sees how it could make you bitter and terrible like Viserys was.

Ok, my thoughts on the episode:

-I love Robin!

-Hodor!

-Tyrion's "confessions" and his interaction with Mord made me laugh.

-Dany/Drogo

-I did kind of adore Viserys and felt badly for him in this episode.

-The Syrio/Arya scene was so great.

-As was the Joffrey/Sansa scene. I know what's coming, but Joffrey came across as so sincere and charming. Wonderful acting by Jack. But I was bothered by Sansa being so rude to her Septa. It felt OOC for the character.

-Excited about the introduction of Osha, and the Wildlings.

-Sean Bean and Mark Addy had great chemistry. I really believed they were raised as brothers. And the Ned/Robert scenes were a good contrast to the Robert/Renly ones. And brought an interesting subtext to the Robb/Theon scenes.

-And speaking of Theon, he was my favorite part of this episode. And he had my favorite line in the episode: "It was the only thing to do. So I did it."

Great episode, as per usual. Probably another high 7 or 8 for me.

Robb is hot. Glad to see more of him this episode. He should have killed that girl though. And I miss Jon!

Loved the Dani/Drogo stuff and finally Viserys got what was coming to him. That was an epic scene. Also she said fire cannot kill the dragon but she touched the fire so...

Theon really shined in this episode, really great to learn more about him. I also liked the introduction of the guy that fought for Tyrion, I think Bronn was his name? (Are there a lot of repeat names in this show?)

Geoffrey is the worstttt and Sansa isn't far behind. She is such a brat. Her rudeness to Septa was so annoying. And hmmm, Geoffrey being the only blonde in his family, was that a reveal that he is actually Jaime's son?

Tyrion continues to be the strongest character on the show imo. He's one of the only characters that gets great storylines and screen time every single episode.
